Family Reunion Ideas for Maine Coast

Our family is starting to plan our 2016 family reunion, and have selected the Maine coast as our destination. We can use help selecting a lodging facility. Here are some considerations: There will be 45 of us, we would like maybe some cottages with kitchens, modest in price (not dirt cheap, but not the Ritz), and hopefully on the coast. We will only be there 4 nights, so can not do a weekly minimum. Interest in hiking, boating, fishing, etc.

One idea is Acadia NP, but may be too pricey. Most people will be flying in to Portland. Other ideas is renting a few houses in Kennebunkport.

We normally stay in National Park cabins, but there do not seem to be any in Maine.

If anyone knows of a nice cottage facility, or has a different idea, we would appreciate the help.

Have you checked out Ogunquit?
Sometimes the weekly rate is as good as better for paying for 4 nights. With that many people, it may be the best option - and could provide for stayovers for family members who want to stay in the area after the reunion.

We stayed here a couple of years ago and I thought it would be perfect for a reunion location. On the water, variety of lodging, big field with sports equipment, a nightly firepit.

The Glenmoor is beautiful, but the room rates are over $400 per night in July, too steep for most of us.

We are considering Ogunquit, but my sister thinks it is important to be near Acadia NP?

Thanks for the feedback!

A place like this would be along the lines of what you are looking for, but fitting in 45 is the problem.

This one can house 44 -

I'd look for similar motor lodge/cottage complexes along the coast near Bar Harbor. We stayed in one years ago but it was too small for your needs.

We enjoyed our stay at Bar Harbor Motel, although the units don't have kitchens, only a small refrigerator. With only four nights, maybe a kitchen might not be as essential?? It is a modest facility with a great location, convenient to both Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. There is a trail leading from the back of the grounds to one of the carriage roads. The free island shuttle makes a stop at the motel. It also has a heated swimming pool that any children in the group will be sure to enjoy.

Wow, Glenmore wasn't anywhere near that pricey 2 years ago! New owners had just bought it and they must have upgraded things.

With 45 people no kitchen would be a bad idea IMO, especially if any are kids.

Ocean Point Inn outside Boothbay Harbor. Cottages, pool, waterfront. Not a lot to do.

Liniken Bay in Boothbay Harbor has everything but Swayze, Baby in a corner, and a watermelon.

I think it is Linekin Inn, and, yes. It is worth looking at. Not as far from town as Ocean Point Inn.

I don't know about a Linekin Inn. I was referring to Linekin Bay resort. It is a Dirty Dancing old school type of resort that includes sailing and kayaking and 3 square meals a day for their guests. The family used to do a daily schooner tour, but I don't think that is available.

Honestly to the OP, I'm pulling this out of my hat. I last toured the property about 5 years ago off season, and it was very familiar to when I stayed with Baby and Swayze in the late 70's. Lots of water activities. Back in the day they had a beautiful wooden sailboat that went out once a day for those that didn't want to get hands on with small sailboats, rowboats and kayaks. All inclusive.

I thought it might be a carefree idea with inclusive meals. It's not always easy to delegate cooks and shoppers with a group of 45 that don't see each other often. A few get left in the kitchen and grocery store and cleanup, while the others play.

The prices add up, but worth investigating when you deduct the cost of expensive meals and shopping and cooking.

Maine Coast is going to be pricey in July and August especially near Acadia, there is no getting around it. So if sister thinks the main focus of the 4 day trip is going to be the National Park, then tell her you'll need to up the budget.
