My husband and I are travelling on these dates. We will be landing at New York. We will rent a car, either in New York or Boston. Pse let me know, which is the best itinerary to enjoy the fall foliage , from 30 sept to 05 oct as we plan to stay a few days in New York. Pse I have NO idea. many thanks

Your dates are too early for fall foliage in NY or Boston - you need to go further inland and to higher elevations to have a lot of changed foliage that early. Really you would be best heading up to Montreal for the best color. The best dates near Boston are mid Oct - and for NYC it's late Oct.

The farther north you get the quicker the more you will see. You would prob. have to go to Northern Vermont/New Hampshire. Get in your car and head up the slower US Route 7 North from Norwalk, Connecticut or up (north) on the faster New York State Thruway. Rutland, Vermont area is excellent on or about Columbus Day, Oct. 11. So for good viewing before Oct. 5 you'll have to go well above Rutland area.

Also you will find the North East Kingdom of Vermont will be having their Fall foliage festivals during those dates.
First I would fly and not drive from New York. Then from Boston you will drive up route 93 to route 89 to route 91. This you will take up to the northern parts for Vermont.
You should pick one place to stay and there are many to pick from. I know Karen at the Peacham general store should have her B&B up and running. but you could also pick St Johnsbury or other small towns to stay in.
I would also not wait much longer to make reservation. The number of places to stay is limited and the fill up sometimes a year in advance. For dates and towns holding their fall festivals please visit this page on www.jeff-foliage.com, http://jeff-foliage.com/fall-festiva...fall-festival/
Here you can see what towns are holding court on what days.
The trip from Boston to Northern VT will take between 4-5 hours and you should have a Gazetteer map book of Vermont from Delorme (order on Amazon).
Also ask that your rental has a GPS if you don't already have one.
I hope this gives you a good starting point...
