The color reports change every couple of days. What is your exact date of arrival? Have you reserved your car? I would probably not rent the car for the days that you are in Boston, (which should probably be the days at the end of your trip since color is early this year.)

How many persons do you need to accommodate and do you have an approximate per-night budget in mind? Also what time of day does your flight arrive and how far do you think you'll want to drive after the long flight?

Check www.yankeefoliage.com for color.
Reservations are essential and may be limited at this late date.

thank you Debbie and Happy We are with 2 persons Arrive in the evening in Boston. Thought to do 2 days Boston Then go out to the fall colours .This might not work if we do Boston first as car rental cheapest at airport? We can do Boston end of the trip Budget $70-80 a night. It is supply and demand isn't it?? We don't necessarily need to do Tourist routes as one commend was we left it a bit late?? We thought of driving 4-5 hours a day This can be flexible again...but not 10 hours everyday!! Thanks Hope this helps to give some more advise

Much needed Thank you so much so far!!

Color in NH is starting a little early because of drought conditions. I wouldn't gamble with the weather. A heavy rain can take down a lot of leaves so I would go leaf peeping first and enjoy Boston at the end of your trip.

I agree that you should make reservations ASAP for the weekends. If you arrive on a weekday, I would consider driving north out of Boston just far enough to avoid the worst of morning commuter traffic. But, if you are arriving on a Friday evening, stay wherever convenient but get an early start north because traffic will be heavy as everyone heads out for the weekend.

I love our scenery but too many miles are going to get boring. I would choose some places to visit based on your interests. Foliage color is a little later on the coast so Portsmouth NH would make a great place for a couple of days plus an easy drive via I95 to Boston.

I actually don't care for the scenery in the mountains preferring more southerly routes. I like the route along Lake Champlain in VT where there is rolling farmland but Rt 100 gets a lot of votes from Fodorites.

New England is so small that you could stay one place for several nights and explore in all directions. One summer we spent a half week in the Burlington VT area, visited Shelburne Museum on our drive south and then stayed the rest of the week closer to Middlebury.

The first 2 weeks of October is perfect, but it's also the busiest time. All of New England has lots of color, but the northernmost areas will be starting to fade a week into October. The White Mountains of new hampshire are very spectacular, but there is beautiful countryside in central and southwestern NH as well. Nearly all of Vermont is very rural and picturesque. The Berkshires of western Mass are not as imposing as those in NH or VT, but have their own tranquil beauty. Some towns to consider in NH - Sugar Hill, Jackson, Littleton, Lyme, Hancock, New London. In Vermont - Stowe, Rochester, Waitsfield (the round Barn inn is beautiful), Saxon's River, Norwich, Chester, Grafton. There are scores of other very pleasant towns in all 3 states. Needless to say, reserve rooms asap.

$70-$80 where? You would never find anything in Boston that low. Good luck finding lodging and since this "high season" in New England, be prepared to pay much more.

ohoh, I missed the $70-80 night budget. You might find something under $100 at a basic motel but I'm not sure where.

Boston prices for a bunk bed in a multi person room in a youth hostel can be U$60 at times.

The trees seem to be going straight to brown this year due to a long drought this summer.

The trees are starting to turn up here in NH, they look fine - not turning brown. You will be hard pressed to find any lodging in Boston under $200 a night, perhaps less in outlying areas. There are probably simple mom & pop motels and such in NH and VT that would be under $100 a night in the less touristed areas (which are less crowded).
