Fairmont or Four Seasons?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Maui in September to celebrate my retirement from 30 years of teaching. We have been to Maui once before in 1992 and stayed at the Hyatt Regency. We are thinking of staying in Wailea this time. Which hotel would be a better choice? The Fairmont or the Four Seasons? We would be spending a lot of time on the beach so a nice beach is a must. At night we enjoy nice restaurants with good food and music. Are there many restaurants in the Wailea area or do you have to travel out of the area? If I could get some info on both hotels, it would be helpful.

How much do you want to spend? Do you need a 840 sq ft suite? I'd opt, and we are in Sept, for the FS. Some have said the Kea Lani is a bit dated in the interiors, though others have said the same about the FS! Who's to really say... We got a great deal at the FS - $425 a night with car and breakfast. Kea Lani is MUCH more so we're doing the FS. It came down to the money for us, plus, we were curious to try the FS their. If we don't like it after a few nights, we could always spend the last 3 nights at the other.

Hi there,

We stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani and loved it. Don't worry about the state of the rooms...just make sure you request a renovated room (they're great)when you reserve your room. September is considered off-season so you should have no problems getting one and you'll probably even get an upgrade if they're not that busy. When we went (last month), the Kea Lani was cheaper than the FS.

The service is supposed to be top-notch so at the FS, so I don't think you can go wrong either way. Make sure you do research on the Net for a good deal...you can often get better rates via a package. Have a nice anniversary.

We are staying at the Four Seasons in September. I think the Kea Lani was slightly cheaper when we will be visiting. Our travel agent recommended the 4S over the Kea Lani because she thought the service was better.

I'm sure both are fantastic hotels. The 4S has a lot of extras included in your rate - no resort fee, free valet parking, cabanas, water and snacks at the pool, etc. We can't wait to go!

We are also planning a trip in Sept.to Maui and Kauai. Have you thought about a beachfront condo? I am collecting info from fellow "fodorites" and so far the condos they have steered me to look great. We are also looking at the same hotels as you are 4S and Kea Lani, but are now reconsidering. What do YOU think of this option?
