The 1980 United States heat wave was among the most devastating natural disasters in terms of deaths and destruction in U.S. history. The heat wave claimed anywhere between 1,250 and 10,000 lives. Also because of the massive drought, agricultural damage estimates neared US$44 billion (1998 dollars). It is among the billion-dollar weather disasters listed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
In Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, high temperatures exceeded 100°F for 69 days between June 23 and September 6. Dallas/Fort Worth reached an all-time high on June 26 and 27, soaring to 113°F (45°C) on both days. In the northern hemisphere summer of 1980 in Dallas/Fort Worth, there were 29 days that either tied or broke records for those respective dates. Wichita Falls, Texas would hit 119°F (48°C), the second-highest temperature ever recorded in Texas.

The temps in Nevada and southern California sound dreadful and dangerous for the sick and elderly, I hope they are being looked after.
The weather report for Portland, OR, looks sunny and summery and just right.
Although I hate the heat, I do wish some of you could send just a *few* degrees of it our way. We are freezing. The space heater is running in our bedroom and here in the den I am wearing a sweater and have a blanket draped around my shoulders like some Dickens character. My hands feel like ice.
A visiting couple from France was sitting next to me at a cafe this afternoon and their poor whippet was shivering and miserable. The couple was debating whether they should find a pet shop to buy their dog a sweater. In July!!

In Salt Lake City UT it was 100 degrees yesterday and supposed to be 102 for the next 3 days. This is not too unusual for summer, but it's been a completely dry spring, and well below normal snowfall year. The ground is bone dry and our usually low humidity is clear down to 6%!
I live in Park City at 6500 ft., but my native plants and flowers are curling up and dying. We are really worried about more wildfires.
