Extra Charge for HOTEL rooms
It really makes me angry when hotels charge extra for children in the same room as their parents. I guess I should just make a reservation for 2 but this also bothers me as I am not being totally honest. Any comments on this?

It always makes me angry when I pay the same rate as a couple next two with two noisy kids who lower the value of my hotel room. You are getting extra accommodation, if you don't want to pay for it, go to a "family friendly" hotel where they don't charge, many don't. What's your problem? If you buy a service at an agreed-rate, you pay it; if you don't like those rates for what you get, go somewhere else. HOliday Inn, for example; there are many hotels that give you free rooms for the kids.

Well, you've gotten a higher than average number of irrelevant/nasty replies to this.
I ran into this once when my daughter was little. The message it sent was that the hotel was not interested in the business of families with children. Fine, we took our business elsewhere (and continue to do so now that she is grown).
In a way I am saying "look for another hotel", like some other posters--but I understand your annoyance.

John,
I greatly appreciate the fact that you don't want to lie to the hotel. You are to be commended. If your kids see that you lied to a hotel, that teaches them that it is ok to lie.
But...
It is inconsequential whether the two extra people are kids or adults (ie parents, aunts, uncles, friends) staying with the two adults paying for the room. Two people are two people. Do kids use less water, fewer sheets, less electricity than adults? No. I would actually venture to say that it costs more to the hotel for children to stay in a room based on some of the damage that can be done to a room/hotel when children are present.
When we went on vacation with my aunt and uncle and cousins, my brother and our cousin Billy used to cause all kinds of trouble...same is true of many of the kids of friends of mine. One boy got a kick out of throwing ice off of the 20 or 30-something floor of the Downtown Atlanta Marriott onto the lobby below. One boy broke into a Coke machine because he didn't have a dollar for a Coke. Kids can cause damage and the hotel needs to recoup the cost.
I have other stories of broken tv's etc. done by kids that I know or have known.
Not that adults a saintly or anything, but the kids probably do most of the damage.

No, what really makes me mad is that some hotels charge the same for an entire family including a couple of kids that they charge me and my wife. Why shouldn't we get a lower rate since there are only two of us instead of four? Makes me feel like we are paying more than our fair share to make up for the extra linens, service, water, etc. that the larger group is using.
