Has anyone stayed at Evergreen Lodge near Yosemite recently? It looks pretty interesting but also kind of primitive. Since there will be just two female travelers, I would like to know it is a safe place. Any other suggestions for a place to stay near the west entrance of Yosemite would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

We stayed at Evergreen Lodge for four nights in Sept.'99. The cabins are basic but clean with private bathrooms, (ours only had a shower, no bath). The staff were very friendly and helpful and the compilmentary breakfast was pretty good. There is a small general store there and they will make up packed lunches for you which is a great help if you intend to spend the days hiking. We ate in the restaurant in the evenings as there really is nowhere else within short driving distance, the food was very good, nice homemade soups and good steaks (large portions-we used to share an entree!), plus daily specials. I would have no worries about safety while staying there, OK it is in a wooded setting but the cabins are not isolated from each other, we just found it very very peaceful and very good value for money.
