Escape from NYC - Boston Cambridge
A Guide Named Sue (that's me) left NYC for a brief trip to Boston and Cambridge via train. Had a wonderful time. Details and links here:

Sounds like you had a lovely time both w/both the sightseeing and being able to share it w/your niece.
I had occasion to take Amtrak from Boston twice last year---after not using it for many years--once to Philadelphia and once to New Haven. (Just regular cheap class). I found it so relaxing and so comfortable! Of course both trips were at off-peak times with the cars having lots of empty seats, but definitely so much better than flying.

You will see more of the places I visited if you click the hot links to their websites. I am not much of a photographer. I spend more time using the naked eye.
