Emerald Lake, Alaska

Here I spend months doing research and now I'm just one month away from our cruise and more options keep coming to my attention! My email buddy is planning to rent a car in Skagway and drive to Emerald Lake. I can't find Emerald Lake in any of my guide books! On this site, BQ says it's 75 miles from Skagway. Should we try to rent a car and do this (family of 4, 2 teens)?? How much time should we allocate? I must admit the Skagway attractions don't interest me too much. I also understand Avis rents in Skagway.

Emerald Lake is NOT in Alaska, It's in Yukon Ca. Avis is the only major rental, there are 3 independents. See if they still have cars available? Print out Murray's South Klondike Highway guide. www.explorenorth.com Very very scenic drive that takes most people 5++ hours.

Thanks, BQ! I don't know what this site would do without you! Is this a trip we would still want to make if we had rain??

YES, you will run into a variety of weather on this trip. The White Pass can be cold, damp etc and a few miles farther, full sun.

Thanks, as always, BQ! We do have a rental car confirmed and I did go to the library today for CANADA guide books which help somewhat but info still is sketchy. Wrt a picnic, can we get something on the way or near Emerald lake, or should we get something in Skagway? Also, thanks for the (much) earlier recommendation on Into the Wild; I got it as a book on tape from the library.
