El Morro in N Mexico

We are doing a road trip to Albuquerque and want to see El Morro. After reading on the national park site about mountain lions and snakes, I hesitate. Would like to do inscription trail which is supposed to be an easy 1 mile walk but no liking the idea of wild animals. Anyone done this in March and should I be wary? Thanks.

I have done the trail around inscription hill, it is amazing to read those carvings that are 400 years old.

It was summer, didn't see any critters.

We have done it a couple of times in April and have encountered harmless snakes, but were assured by the park ranger that there were no rattlesnakes in the park. The snakes were very sluggish, and I would guess that they might not be out in March.

The inscriptions are very interesting and the hike to the ruins on the top is worth the effort too. I have some pictures of it if you care to look at www.flickr.com/photos/emalloy2009/sets in the 2009 set I think.

Have a great trip.

We went in May 2008 and saw neither snakes nor mountain lions.

Are you planning on doing this as a day trip from Albuquerque, or on your way somewhere else? We included El Morro on a weekend loop trip - Acoma Pueblo, El Morro, spent the night at The Inn at Halona on Zuni Pueblo, then headed south and back east to Pie Town and the Very Large Array before returning to Albuquerque.

We have visited in March and April. We didn't see any animals, but had the bluest skies I've ever seen. I thought the inscriptions were fascinating.

Almost certainly too cold for rattlesnakes to be active in March so no worries there. Seeing a mountain lion on the Inscription Trail is seriously unlikely. No need to be wary or worry or even give it a second thought.

dillysnana, I found the picture of the snake we saw and put it in the set I cited above. Just in case anyone doubts the existance.
