Edgewater Hotel or Hotel Monaco in Seattle?
My sister and I are meeting in Washington next week and will spend one night in Seattle. Since we are splitting the cost of the room, we can choose between the Edgewater and the Hotel Monaco. Both are convenient to Pike Place, etc., but which one would be a nicer stay? Thanks for your input!

The Monaco is better located to the Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square, the retail core (Nordstroms, Macy's, etc.), and our new Library.
The attraction of the Edgewater is that half the rooms have great water views. If you have one of the rooms with a view--that would be nice.
On the other hand, two women wondering around at night back and forth between the Edgewater and downtown points of interest wouldn't be so nice.
Others may have a different slant on the choice.

Your name implies that you are from the desert and a room on the water may be something you might enjoy. The Edgewater is a good hotel with a good restaurant. It has a very NW feel to it and you would be close the the market as well as the waterfront area shops and restaurants.

We stayed at the Edgewater about 2 years ago. It has a beautiful location on the water. However, it is not conveniently located; expect to do a lot of walking. Also we felt that it was over priced. For the price, there were not many amenities. Could not even cup of coffee at night time in the hotel, Can’t comment on the other hotel.

Thanks--this is very helpful. Close location to Pike Place is one consideration as we won't have a lot of extra time and we will definitely want to spend time at the market. Since we're splitting the cost, I am open to other hotel ideas that would be a bit of a splurge.
Also, I will be taking my sister out to dinner for her birthday while we are there--any good recommendations for the local specialties? Thanks!

The Monaco is my favorite hotel in San Francisco and can only imagine that the Seattle location will be just as good. I vote for the Monaco (and have a goldfish delivered to your room for a bit of company !

What about the Inn at the Market? Used to be very nice some years ago, and it's right, as the name says, at the Market.
I have fond memories of the Edgewater, where I stayed many times. They used to have a courtesy shuttle van that would take you downtown or wherever.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I decided to go with the Hotel Monaco for its location and the great comments I have read.
Last item--any special restaurants for a birthday dinner? I have eaten at Wild Ginger, which is very good, but would like to try someplace new. I think my sis would enjoy seafood or pan asian cuisine.

For fish, my first choice is The Waterfront (request a table "into the room"--away from the exhibition kitchen and reception desk). Elliot's is another favorite on the waterfront; I haven't eaten there, but I have checked it out and find the atmosphere wanting in comparison to The Waterfront.
Virtually all good Seattle restaurants serve well prepared fish. Among those downtown are Etta's, Dahlia Lounge, Braza, Oceanaire, and The Georgian Room in the Olylmpic Hotel.
For casual dining, try the Bell Street Diner on the waterfront; it is part of the Anthony's chain of seafood restaurants. Outdoor service is available there. Of Il Fornaio, in Pacific Place, which serves perfect calamari and an outstanding antipasto.

Or just take the elevator down to the restaurant in the Monaco, Sazerac. Simply outstanding food - one of the best places in the city. Sort of Seattle-meets-New Orleans-by-way-of-Mars. Fun and good.

desertgirl,
Having stayed at both of these hotels this past year I can say I think you'd be happy with either one. The Hotel Monaco is a more centrally located, offers better amenities and has their customary wine reception in the afternoons. Although, I found their wine reception to be subpar to the one in San Francisco and personally wouldn't go out of my way to attend. The standard rooms at the HM are larger than the Edgewater's as well.
The Edgewater, on the other hand, has rooms right on the water. In many cases, hanging directly over the water. The rooms are smaller but still are nicely appointed in a PNW theme and include fireplaces. Each room on the waterfront also has a small balcony that can accommodate a couple of chairs. Loved hanging out on the water. The Monaco rooms offer no view to speak of.
Both hotels have restaurants: Sazerac at the Monaco - neat place with "southern fusion" food; 6's & 7's at The Edgewater - gorgeous room right on the water featuring some unique seafood preparations.
You're bound to read how far The Edgewater is to everything, however, I found this to be a bit of an exageration. Pike Market took us five to seven minutes to reach on foot and Pioneer Square is just a short Trolley ride away. The trolley stops almost right in front of The Edgewater.
Good Restaurants near The Edgewater include: Waterfront Street Grill; 6's & 7's; Anthony's Pier 66; everything in the Pike Market area.
Agree with happytrailstoyou in that, if you're planning to spend more time downtown, you'd probably be better off at the Monaco rather than walking back and forth at night.
Which would I return to? As much as I love Kimpton hotels, I would probably go back to The Edgewater just to be on the water--and for their restaurant and lounge. But of course, I'm from Colorado.
Have fun!

Etta's Seafood (at the north end of the Market) is lovely and one of my favorites. Matt's at the Market gets consistently good comments.
Cutter's and Anthony's are a bit more tourist oriented but both right on the water with spectacular views and large menus of seafood items.
Monaco is definitely a better location choice than the Edgewater (which offers a shuttle service but is not a convenient or desirable walk from the Pike Place Market).
