Eating out in Oahu and Maui question

First I want to thank everyone for the extremely helpful information they have provided for my other questions

What are your favorite places to eat in Oahu and Maui? We will have 2 children with us, one that is a very adventurous eater (almost 12), and one that is not (9 yr old)

We are looking for casual places - no jacket and tie type of place. Don't feel like packing that type of clothing. Upscale is fine as long as a nice casual outfit is ok

I know that one place I definitely want to eat at is Roy's either in Oahu or in Kehi. I have eaten at his restaurant in Newport Beach, California and thought it was wonderful.

We will be in Waikiki for 4 nights at the Moana Surfrider, and 9 nights in Maui at the Grand Wailea

The Banyan Veranda restaurant at your own hotel (the Moana) is very very nice. Make a reservation for sunset. I had a lovely birthday dinner there one trip. Or the courtyard below which is more casual food.

I don't think they wear jackets & ties in Hawaii, except for maybe the groom at a wedding.

Don't miss Dukes at Waikiki... its a great family restaurant right on the beach and they offer Bfast, Lunch, Dinner and a great buffet for your picky eater... you can also get the kids surfing lessons from the surf hut right on the beach and have them photographed hangin ten while on their boards... my kids found this to be one of their trip highlights and the digital photos have been great proof for friends and family of their surfing prowess... you can surf also or hang out on the beach and watch... also, since Dukes is on the beach, swimsuits and flip flops are the fashion of choice... have fun!!!

Your options are endless on Oahu!! Yes, definitely try Roy's. We love the foodcourt at the Ala Moana Mall. LOTS of choices and it's great for kids.

Zippy's is a Hawaiian fast food restaurant on Oahu that serves a lot of local favorites, so that might be good for lunch if you're out and around. One thing that might be fun for your kids to try is mochi -- little nuggets of ice cream surrounded by a rice flour dough. You can get them at any grocery store in different flavors (and you can even find them at some Trader Joe's stores here). Ezogiku is another very casual place right on Kalakaua down near Gucci -- they serve Japanese style noodles, which are good and basic, but still something new (it's like going to Japan in there!).

Definitely go to Roy's. Not all the US locations are as good as the originals; some of them are franchised. I'd recommend Roy's Kahana Bar and Grill in Kapalua. Surely you'll visit the Lahaina area.. You don't want to go to Roy's Nicolina - the Bar and Grill is more appropriate for children; they'll enjoy the large open kitchen. No matter which location you go to, you'll need reservations. Don't forget to order the chocolate souffle, and be sure to try the local seafood (particulary the snappers - opah and opakapaka; and of course there's nothing like fresh ahi tuna).

Duke's in Oahu also has 3 restaurants on Kannapali beach in Lahaina. It's fun to sit in the sand, especially after a day on the beach, with a gorgeous view of Lanai and Molakai. Good food, and very reasonable.

On Oahu the Hula Grill is good too. Also, for casual Tiki's is fun.

If you want to dine rather economically with some locals, alfresco, try Aloha Plate Lunch on Maui (right next to the Old Lahaina Luau). Try the loco moco if you're really hungry! Good Mai Tais too!

If you do the circle around the west, don't pass up Auntie Ululani's for the finest shave ice ever!! Ask for coconut ice cream on the bottom!
Avoid the shave ice at the snack stand at Hanauma Bay on Oahu, as it was large and hard, little flavor & not easily eaten IMHO!

At Whalers Wharf, Leilani's was especially good food, service and busy but nice beachside atmosphere (right on the boardwalk). I had the fish tacos, onion strings and hula pie (all superb!), which had been recommended to me on this board. We split the hula pie, but it was so much food, I wished we had split the entire order...which is not a bad idea most places you go, if you're sampling different places, things , which seemed to be our case!

If you can make one of the farmer's markets, they give free samples of EVERYTHING! I essentially had breakfast there one morning! They only do it a couple times/week. I believe ours was on Tues. at the Honokawai location, but I understand there is also one in Kihei.
If you run into Joann (jewelry kiosk), say 'hello' for me!

We also enjoyed Seawatch for lunch on Maui.

Nick's fishmarket was my fav on Maui, but it may be more $$$ than you want to spend with the kids...more of a romatic atmosphere IMHO. Ditto for Mama's. You think about it...they are both fantastic!

On Oahu, make sure you try Giovanni's Shrimp Truck on the north shore (Romey's is more $$ and more tame in taste).

The Ocean House at the Outrigger Reef Hotel (on the beach boardwalk) was a tip from a fellow traveler and it was good & more economical than some.

Also, if you can find Leonard's, don't miss the Malasada's (portugese donuts)! I don't usually allow myself this luxury, but this creme filled luxuries were worth it!

Make sure you have reservations at Duke's (somewhat hard to get at times!)

Now, excuse me as I waddle on out!

Belle

ABC Stores all have good food to go. From very plain sandwiches (for the picky eater), cut up fresh fruits, salads, cold noodles, sushi (for the more adventurous). There's a McDonald's and a snack stand right off the beach at the edge of Ft DeRussey Park at Waikiki beach. Along the main boulevard you'll find hamburger, ice cream, etc. places.

My 10-year-old grandson's favorite was Cheeseburgers in Paradise. He chose the five-napkin burger and wished for the ten-napkin. We are going back in June, and it's high on his list.

We all liked the Shorebird buffet breakfast at the Outrigger Reef. He practically ate his weight in fresh pineapple.

Yes, Leonard's is legendary! Zippy's is good too. There's a place called L & L's all over Oahu (mostly in Honolulu) that has outstanding plate lunches. I believe there's one in the Ala Moana Mall as well. For good plate lunches on Maui, go to Da Kitchen in Kihei.

You can find all sorts of different mochi other than the ones with ice cream in the center - there are the ones with azuki bean filling, sweet potato filling, even peanut butter or a fresh strawberry. Personally my favorite is the ones not filled with anything, but flavored with coconut milk - chichi dango. You can buy the ones filled with ice cream at the supermarket - a box of 6, I believe. Or you can go to Bubbies by the university and buy them singly.

There's so many good places to eat, it's hard to recommend any without knowing your tastes.

Wow great advice

We like any type of cuisine and like trying new places. For my 9yr old if there is nothing on the menu he cares for we have found that any place will make plain steak or plain pasta.

We are thinking of going to Mama's fishouse as I have heard it is worth it. Nicks at the Fairmont is also on the list. Maybe Spago too. We loved Spago in Beverly Hills. Those will be our splurges.

The Aloha Plate seems like just the place we want to try for Hawaiian fare. Dukes sounds like a lot of fun too

When we were in Hawaii we had shave ice at Matsamoto. I am gald to see in the guide book that it is still there. Auntie Ululani's sounds good too, where is that located exactly?

We are trying to stay away from chain places that are available at home or places like McDonalds. Cheeseburger in Paradise sounds like fun though

Garyt22- surfing lessons are high on the list for the kids, thanks for the info

How far in advance do you suggest we make reservations for the places that require it. Two weeks, one month, more in advance?

Time to make up a spreadsheet with all of this information

In case it helps these are the sights we plan on seeing in Oahu
Pearl Harbour
PCC
North Shore
Dole Plantation
Chinatown
and a drive down to Hanauma bay area

I figured this was enough for the 3 full days we will have there

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you about the Honokowai Okazuya Deli in Maui for excellent take out! Generous portions and great food! That way, if you wanted to stop by a fast food place for the youngster, you could get what YOU want at the Deli!
Do expect a wait, as they prepare it fresh and they are very popular!

excited...: FYI we were told it would be an 1 1/2 wait at Duke's on a Tues. night at 8:30PM. We were starving, so made lunch reservations for a couple days later (already full for lunch the next day!)

And yes, I'm sure you can just order coffee, dessert, the meal police won't arrest you! lol! In fact, DH and I 'split' meals frequently and in classy places, but never received any ill will for it!
The only place I'm glad we didn't was Chai's on Oahu...it served us 'normal' servings, everyone else gave us what I would call large portions!
We had an internet coupon for Chai's. It was good, but one of the few places we didn't dine beachside.

You're staying at our fave hotels. The Surfrider has a fantastic afternoon tea. You don't need to dress up for it. For adventurous appetites the Food Court at the Ala Moana has everything and the plates are heaped high. On Maui we like Mamma's Fish House. Our kids play on their beach while we finish our meal. We get most of our food ideas from the Fodor's restaurant listings and things to do from the Maui and Oahu Trailblazer books. The Grand Wailea has an amazing pool that you'll be tempted to hang out at all day. Happy vacation!
