We hope to visit Duluth in August. There will be my husband and me (in our 50s) and our nine year old granddaughter. Can you tell us our "must sees", and also give us ideas of where to stay. We are thrifty...but would also like to be as close to the water as we can be. I realize those two things maybe don't go together! Thanks a lot!

Withouy a doubt canal park, its a shop/restuarnat haven right on lake superior. A nice biking/walking trail along the coast. Plenty of scenic drives and hikes a hour or so norht of duluth. Canal park is a very fun area.
Duluth is a fun town. You definitely want to go down to the Canal Park Area and stay there if it is within your budget. There us a Hampton Inn, Inn on the Lake, Comfort Suites, Hawthorn Suites in the Canal Park Area and there is a Radisson and Holiday Inn in downtown (not that far from Canal Park) and two Edgewater Inn's on London Road also not far from Canal Park. I believe one of the Edgewater's has a water park which might be something your grandchild would like. You might try Priceline as some people do get the Radisson, Holiday Inn or Edgewater on Priceline bids. I also think Holiday Inn takes the Entertainment Card and you can get a discount. The Ship museum in Canal Park is very interesting and especially fun when a ship come thru the ship canal as they explain a lot about the ship and you are right next to it as it goes thru the canal. Also fun to see the Aerial Bridge go up. The William Irvin is fun to tour also. It is a former ore carrier that is right behind the Hawthorn Suites and next to the DECC. The harbor tour aboard the Vista Queen is also fun and interesting. Glensheen Mansion (the former Congdon Home) is on London Road and is open for tours and fun to see. If you want to drive up the shore, take the scenic route along the lake to Two Harbors - it is beautiful. If you want to go beyond Two Harbors both Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse are fun to see. All in all I think you will have a good time. We go to that area every August (we live in S. Calif) and we look forward to each trip. Have fun!!
