In the second week of Oct., we plan to stay overnight in Dubuque, IA, do a short drive along the Great River Road, and then cut over to Baraboo, WI. Does anyone have suggestions on what to see or do along this route? Thanks.
Dubuque to Baraboo (suggestions)?

i'm not too familiar with the southwest corner of wis, but I don't think there's a lot there except farm country (which can be quite nice to drive thru).
If you pass thru Spring Green, there's the American Players theater, which will probably still be open (live repertory theater). Also, Talesin is in Spring Green (one of Frank Lloyd Wright's homes).
a little off the path is Cave of the Mounds, in Blue Mound. I haven't been there since I was a kid - it was pretty neat then, but I was also much more easily impressed at that age.
I am very familiar with this area of the state.
Going North on the GRR and cutting over to Baraboo is quite a trek. Dubuque direct to Baraboo is 2+ hours. What you are suggesting is easily twice that maybe more.
Platteville is home to the Mining Museum which teaches you about the lead mining vusiness. Spring Green has House on the rock and the theater previously mentioned. Dickeyville is kind of fun and has the Grotto which is a rock garden built by Catholic Priests, I believe in the late 1800's. Gays Mills is popular for apples and fall vegetables, etc. Hwy. 60 is a nice drive along the WI river. Cassville is a famous bald eagle resting/feeding area as is Sauk City.
I know that was a bit disjointed but it covers a good portion of that area of WI.
Have Fun! You should have good color later in the 2nd week, around the 14th.
In the same general area as Platteville (between Platteville and Madison) is Mineral Point.
If you're interested in learning some of the history of this area, Mineral Point is a nice stop. It was settled by Cornish miners. Much of the original homes and businesses have been restored and are open for touring.
Galena, Illinois is about a 20-minute drive from Dubuque and is a fun town to visit. Galena was considered the "big city" of the area at a time when Chicago was just a bunch of tents. The downtown has original buildings from the 1800s that are now fun shops. Many of the old mansions survive and overlook the downtown. Also the former home of Ulysses S. Grant, whose home is open for tours. There is an old lead mine just outside of Galena that gives tours.
