Don't know who told you that, but Interstate 24 goes from Chattanooga, TN, to Nashville, TN, then Interstate 65 goes north to Chicago.
The interstates all are very safe if you drive at normal speeds, and are routed through valleys and breaks in the mountains . While it's been a long time since I drove from here in ATL through Tennessee, I don't recall any dangerous stretches at all.

If you want to get a sense of what you will be seeing as you drive on an interstate -- or most any other significant road -- Google Earth{R} allows you place "yourself" onto a road, and then "follow" the road along its path.
For example, here's an idea of what you will see in the hills northeast of Chattanooga, probably the "worst" part of your drive:

I would fair more concerned about the potential for bad weather once you hit the northern half of Ill/Ind. All roads on the interstate system met the standards for safety including guard rails. And if driving by yourself with kids make sure you plan for adequate rest stops and hold the drive times to reasonable length.
