Driving to California from Phoenix- hotel on the way suggestion?
We are driving to California from Phoenix area and would like to stop about an hour outside of LA for the night. We will be heading to Gardena for business later that day. Any interesting places to stop for the night and have dinner also?

The only "interesting" place I can think of east of L.A. is the Mission Inn in Riverside. It is a lovely hotel. Riverside, not so much.
However, traffic into L.A. from the inland empire is truly really horrific. How about continuing just past Gardena and staying in Redondo Beach or Manhattan Beach?

Excellent advice LCBoniti!
We've been meaning to try the Mission Inn but most of us step on the gas when we are going through Riverside..
You also could stay in Palm Springs area..right off the 10.
Pasadena has the Langham Huntington that is gorgeous.
What's your budget?
You could do Santa Monica luxury hotels..Viceroy, Lowes, Fairmont..check expedia and direct..great 4-5* hotel deals.

Palm Springs is a good idea but it is 2-3 hours from there into Gardena and you would still have very heavy traffic. You do say your business is "later that day" - how much later? If you arrive in the San Bernardino area after 10am, west-bound traffic will be much less a problem.
Palm Springs is much more interesting than Riverside

Your Mapquest route to Gardena takes you right through Anaheim. That would be a good place to stay overnight because it has tons of hotels and restaurants in all price ranges, to serve Disneyland goers. The next day it's a little over an hour to Gardena, assuming you don't go in the rush hour. If you decide to do that, you can get good advice from these boards on hotels, restaurants, and things to do during the short time you will be there.

If your business in Gardena is after the rush hour, I would stay at either the Mission Inn in Riverside or somewhere in Palm Springs and then drive into LA after rush hour. If you have to be in LA first thing in the a.m., I would drive into the LA Area the night before and stay somewhere closer to your appt. The Mission Inn is a really unique place.
