On this site someone said 20 minutes, but google has it at over an hour. We are planning going in July after Cherry fest midweek. How long will it take us to drive? Should we stay at two different places or do day trips?

I think an hour is more realistic. I'd stay in the Traverse City area and do day trips. Don't miss the Michigan wine country or the cherries around Traverse City.
More than 20 minutes, but less than an hour. I can't imagine Google saying an hour unless you are starting way east of downtown TC. I'd say 40 minutes give or take from the center of TC if you're taking 72 heading west.
Definitely do the Pierce Stocking Drive at the dunes and get out at all the scenic overlooks. Before or after you visit the dunes you should try to spend time in Glen Arbor. Cute little town with lots of galleries and shops, including Cherry Republic.

Enjoy your trip! This is one of the most beautiful areas in Michigan (and the whole country!)
