We will be driving through IN--final destination--Holland, MI. What would be a good place to see on our way through, such as an Amish community or something else that is of unique interest to a person never having been to IN?

French Lick where Larry Bird grew up.
Petal to the medal through one of the most boring states in the US. I guess you could stop in Gary and see the birthplace of Michael Jackson
If you are interested in racecars, you can stop in Speedway, just outside Indianapolis. You can see the track and also a museum. Indy also has a very nice children's museum. I have to admit, I'm from there originally & it's not the most exciting state.
I do have to agree that this is a very boring state to drive through. However, if you are looking for an Amish community, you could look into Shipshewana. They have a big fleamarket every Tues and Wednesday
Have you thought about flying? It only takes an over to fly over Indiana. Much more enjoyable.
sorry, I mean't "it only takes an hour to fly over Indiana."
Pick: Where are you coming FROM? Will you be driving from the west, east or south?
40 miles or so south of Indianapolis is Columbus IN. It's about 40,000 people, but is a treasure-trove of world-class architecture.
"Names like Eero Saarinen, Harry Weese, Richard Meier, and I.M. Pei led the American Institute of Architects to rank Columbus sixth in a list that included Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Boston, and Washington DC for architectural innovation and design."
Check out the web site. The city's well-worth checking out. And take the tour.
If you are going to be near Indian's apolis don't miss Connor's Prarie which is a restored town of about 1850. If is a really great experience to go through the town and listen to the costumed guides.
The beach and lighthouse in Michigan City, In is excellent for swimmings or just walking the shore. Soft clean sand and clear water. If you like shopping a few blocks from the marina is Lighthouse Place Outlets. If you like gambling, there's the Blue Chip Casino. If you like antique's the Red Arrow Highway is full of antique shops.
