My husband and I will be taking a trip during Labor Day starting on August 31 thru
Sept. 10th. We would like to see Boston and
Foxwoods and the coast of Maine then into Vermont. We will be flying then renting a car. So where should we start then going back so we can fly out of same airport.

I would use Logan Airport definately! Because of the holiday I would fly to Boston and stay in Boston over the long weekend. You wouldn't need a car yet and there would be lots to do and see. 9/4 I would head north into southern Maine and enjoy that area for a couple of days. From there head over through NH then go into Vermont. I would stay central, perhaps Woodstock/Queechee area. From there take the highway #91 all the way down to CT and Foxwood's. Back up to Boston and home from there. Don't try to do too much as you won't see anything but the car if you do that!

I forgot to say, 9/4 head to the airport and pick up a reserved rental car. I use Thrifty as the location is very convenient for heading north to Maine as I do a lot!

There is so much to see and do that your route should be based on your interests. Our favorite part of Maine is mid-coast - the Camden/Rockland area. Although Camden has a lot of tourists it has one of the most picturesque harbors. If you want to do a lot of shopping, southern Maine is good but I think mid-coast has prettier, rural drives. Crossing NH via the White Mountains will be most scenice but you'll miss the lakes region less than an hour away. Care for a cruise of Lake Winnipesaukee? You could stay a night or two on the lake and still do day trips thru the mountains (or vice versa). If you enjoy museums I would choose the western side of VT and visit Shelburne Museum. Some people spend more than a day there. I agree with thurstonbb that Boston is a logical airport since you also want to spend some time there.

Southern Maine is so much more than shopping! I rarely go to any of the outlet area. I have owned in York Harbor for 20 years. There is Kittery Point, a couple forts there, York Harbor, the coast road from York to Ogunquit/Perkins Cove, etc. The key is not to spend all the time in the car. People try to do so much then complain they didn't enjoy it. It is because they tried to see TOO MUCH and go TOO FAR!!! 10 days is not a lot of time.

You have many good airports to choose from, depending on the airline you fly. I fly Southwest out of Manchester, NH; Providence, RI or Bradley--Hartford, CT and make my choice based on price. Also, AirTran and Delta fly out of Portland, ME. Almost all the airlines serve Boston. I would find a flight and make a circle tour from the airport I choose. This is "back to college time" in Boston, so be prepared.

Now that I see how many days you have, I think the route is ambitious, unless you want to spend a huge amount of time in the car -
If you arrive on the 31st, - how many days would you want in Boston? I would think at least two full days - so say, Sept 1 and 2 -

which as someone mentioned, this is major move in time for colleges so I think it might be worth considering flying into Logan, picking up your rental car, and heading up the coast of Maine - which you would also need to make rezzies asap for, since it is Labor Day wknd- so it may well depend where you can get rezzies, if some areas have a 2 night minimum on the holiday weekend, etc - so I would be a bit flexible in the initial planning -

either way, if you left Boston on the 3rd, and need to be back in boston on the 10th to depart, that gives you 6 dys of driving travel -

for me personally, I wouldn't want to try and see the coast of Maine, Vermont and Foxwoods/Mystic in CT all in 6 dys -

Can you leave Foxwoods and Mystic for another time/ possibly a CT/NYC drive? or CT/ Western Ma drive?

I would get out my map, make a list of what it is you are trying to see - coast, mountains? What do you want to see in VT?

Wherever you stay, even near some towns in Maine and Vermont, remember between college freshmen moving in and the end of summer, will have hotel rooms booked far ahead so you should try and plan soon
