Take US 89, through Logan, UT, around Bear Lake, into Idaho and then quickly into Wyoming - up to Jackson Hole. Beautiful and scenic.

Should take 6 hrs or so to Tetons.

Roads are fine; 2 lane highways. In Wyoming, the town signs have elevations that are in the thousands of feet, while the population is in the hundreds!

On your return, you can leave YNP at W. Yellowstone, take US 20 to Interstate 15 and head straight south back to SLC.

Or, you can return via IS 189 in Wyoming (leaving the southern YNP entrance) and head toward Kemmerer, WY, and stop at Fossil Butte National Monument (where 50million yr old dinosarus and fossils were found) and then hit Interstate 80 and head West to SLC. Then you can see another flavor of Utah and stop by Park City, a trendy (un-Utah) city which will play a major factor in the upcoming Olympics...

You can't lose... This will be a spectacular trip!!!!

A couple of years ago our family took the route from SLC to Jackson the poster above recommends and it was very enjoyable. I wish we had taken the second return route to SLC that GOL suggested. Instead, we exited through West Yellowstone and returned through Idaho. It was a long, flat and uninteresting route.

I don't know what time you'll arrive in SLC. If we go that route the next time, we'll spend the night in SLC and get an early start up to Jackson. There are not a lot of lodging choices along 89.

If you go to Park City, I'd recommend a trip to the old mine there. OUr kids loved it.

Since you are leaving from the SLC airport you will head north on I-15..and you will have 3 options...
1) Via Logan, Bear Lake, Montpelier, Afton, Alpine into Jackson....good roads although a bit winding going thru the canyons
2) Via Soda Springs, Idaho which takes off from I-15 just past Malad..then past the Greys Lake Bird Refuge on over the pass(Tincup)..in to Star Valley just north of AFton..turn left to Alpine and then on to Jackson..least amount of traffic this way..
3)Via Idaho Falls, Idaho..Swan Valley..Victor....and over the Teton Pass into Wilson and Jackson..
#1 and #2 are perhaps more scenic for driving....all of the roads are Ok...With #3 having the most Interstate to drive on..
In terms of distance..it is 275-300 miles from SLC to Jackson...give or take a few miles...and will take 5 hours to Jackson give or take...
The shortest and fastest way..albeit not that much shorter or faster is #2..
Any questions feel free to get back to me..I travel all of these roads regularly and have done so since the 60's

We take I-80 east to Evanston, Wyoming. Then take 89 north to Woodruff, Utah, back into Wyoming through Cokeville, Wyoming to Afton, Alpine and on to Jackson. Less than 5 hours. From Evanston to Jackson is 199 miles.
