There are many interesting things to see in the USA. These two sites will help you with your plans. Most Civil War sites are managed by the National Park Service.

It's very easy to spend a week in a particular area. What time of year? One summer we spent a month on the road driving thru eastern PA and down the Skyline Drive. Turned around in northern NC and took a coastal route back to NH. We did spend a few days in some areas. In VT you can spend a day exploring Shelburne Museum, some people spend two days. If possible, see if your trip can coincide with some Civil War encampments or reinactments. Once we spent a fascinating day at a farm museum in NH watching demonstrations. The doctor was a doctor in real life and had a very interesting collection of leeches. Reinactors fired guns to give an idea of how smokey the battlefields were.
