Vacation in July a few days inSan francisco and then driving up the coast to visit in Portland ...any suggestions for a route or places to see on the way, places to stay.
Any idea how long it will take stopping and enjoying the sights. Have a friend in Portland so they will show me around there.

straight shot is highway 5 - catching it off 80 toward sacramento near vacaville. A lovely drive but longer is 101 north going through some lovely ocean towns, and small northern ca towns like Ferndale with the wonderful "Painted Ladies". 101 you can stop in some of the wine country if you want to - my fav, Healdsburg...It really is a beautiful drive. In oregon you can drive up the coast and see some fab beaches, great B&B's or connect with 5 going through Ashland, and detour to Crater Lake if you hve the time but that would be an overnight
If you like coastal views and a never boring drive, take Highway 1 north until it merges with 101 at Leggett.
Or, just stay on 1 until Fort Bragg and then turn inland tro 101.
OR, for some good wine experience take 128 east from just south of Mendocino through the Andersen Valley and Boonville to Cloverdale andthen north on 101.
In OR, unless you want to go over to I-5, I'd just stay on 101 until Tillamook and then SR 6 into Portland area.
Good overnight ideas would be Mendocino, the Redwood Coast form Eureka to Crescent City (Trinidad, Arcata, McKinleyville).
In OR, DW likes Lincoln City or Florence.
