Driving from RI to NB, Best Place to Overnight in Maine?
Hello On Memorial Day weekend my mom, daughter and I will be driving from RI to Campbell Island NB. We want to stop halfway to break up the drive but aren't sure where the best place to stay would be. We've been looking at the map trying to decide on the best place. Any suggestions?

Portland looks a little less than halfway but would offer a range of lodging and restaurants. If you wanted a late afternoon activity you might consider a mail boat cruise of Casco Bay. We've been on the early morning one but I believe there's one to watch the sunset. You could also stretch your legs with a little shopping in the Old Port area. Ice cream sampler from MDI Ice Cream or ?
Brunswick is further north and since it's a college town, you shouldn't have any problem with restaurant choices and lodging unless it's college graduation.

I would consider pushing through to Bangor for an overnight. This is only two hours beyond Portland and allows you to stay on I-95 all the way. Bangor is where you will have to leave the interstate. It is secondary roads from Bangor to New Brunswick and is about a two and a half hour drive to New Brunswick. Their are plenty of hotels but I would definitely call ahead for reservations.

I'm confused. Are you talking about Campobello Island, close to Eastport and Lubec, Maine or Barney Campbell Island towards the middle of NB? If you are headed to Campobello Island, Portland is midway. If you are headed to Barney Campbell Island, Bangor would be the choice. Pushing through to Bangor would be my choice regardlessl since you are talking about breaking up the drive - although Portland would probably be more interesting. It sounds like a nice trip.

Might be difficult to find single-night lodging in Portland on a holiday weekend, especially if this stop is on the Saturday night. Our suggestions also might vary since we don't know if you are leaving Rhode Island late and just want a place to stop and sleep, or if you're looking to arrive in the afternoon then get out and explore as well/see something interesting.

Thanks for all the responses! We're leaving RI early morning and are looking for a place to stop where can explore a bit and sleep then drive the rest of the way sun morning. Would a good plan be Portland for lunch then sleep in Bangor?
