Driving from Raleigh-Durham airport to Asheville
We're arriving late morning (10/28) at RDU, driving to Asheville to stay there for a week. Any suggestions for places to stop for lunch or a quick stroll along the way to A'ville? (Not looking for major tourist sites as we'll want to get where we're going.)
Thanks.

If you don't mind stopping pretty soon after you start, Durham or Chapel Hill would make a nice lunch stop. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill or Ninth Street in Durham have some restaurants and would make for a nice hour or two.
If you want somewhere further along, you might check out Greensboro, but I can't help much with specifics there.

If you care to venture into Greensboro, I'd suggest Fincastles - http://www.fincastles.com/ or Natty Greene's - http://www.bigdraft.com/pub.html

In Greensboro, I recommend The Green Valley Grille at teh O'Henry Hotel.
In Winston Salem, check out the Salem Tavern in Old Salem or the Midtown Dessertry (take the N Stratford Road exit off I-40 and it is on your left)
In Mocksville, the Ketchie Creek Bakery and Deli. Take the Mocksville (601 highway) exit off I-40 and go straight till you see the Ketchie Creek Bakery on your right. About three miles.
In Black Mountain, the Veranda. Take the downtown exit and go into Black Mountain. Go to the light and take a left then take the next right. The Veranda will be on your right.

A word of warning - for some reason known only to satellites and GPS programmers, we have always had gremlins in the GPS in that area - and have used 2 different GPS systems. Don't know if you will have one for this adventure, but there has been some black hole about 20 minutes out of RDU where GPS fails to acknowledge that there is a road, a car, or any connection between the 2 - the roads we were on are not all that new, so I have no clue what the problem is - but it has ahppened 3 different times.

In Chapel Hill- 411 West Italian Cafe is very nice and across the street there is the very good Mediterranean Deli.
I have not had a GPS problem in that particular area ( elsewhere I am usually in a field) but as long as you stay on/get back to I-40 West you'll get to Asheville.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll print out and take with us so when the hunger pangs activate, we'll see where we are (and NOT on a gps!) and check out one of the options from Fodorites.

Many people consider Lexington Barbecue #1 (in Lexington) to be the essence of western North Carolina BBQ.
It would be a little jag off of I-40, but looking at a map it doesn't appear it'd add too much time to the trip.

The road signs through Greensboro seem to change on a regular basis. You want to drive through Greensboro and not around on the half completed loop (I-840). When I was driving through Greensboro earlier this week, the road signs for I-40 did reflect this, but it could change by your visit.
