We will leaving NJ around noon for NMB and expect heavy traffic. Anyone have any suggestions how to avoid DC? Unfortunatley we are stuck with the departure time of 12-1pm. We are looking to stay over nite around Richmond

Trip Ideas
Can you wait until later to leave? You'd have a much more pleasant drive if you wait until about 8PM.
If that doesn't work, I'd just realize that you'll be on I-95 with extremely heavy traffic.
Exit on to I-40 around Wilmington and take Highway 17 into NMB.
The flip side is that the roads should be clear on Saturday morning.
Thanks for your help. I will suggest it to the group. I have a feeling i'm in for a long miserable day...
I agree with GoTravel. Definitely take the i40 route.
If you leave at 8PM, I'd just drive straight through.
