driving from LV to San Francisco in July
Hi,
Me, my wife and two kids 15 and 16 will be driving from LV to San Fran later this month (bit late I know!!) and was hoping to get some info on the best route. If possible taking in Yosemite and Death Valley on the way, we have 2 or 3 nights before we have to be in SF.
Open to any other ideas that you might have as route or places to stay have not been decieded yet, any good places to stay on route would be very helpful
Thanks
Paul

Death Valley is not recommended in the summer.
Take US95 north and then NV266 west to California. I believe that between NV and CA there is a turn off to a National Forest area with bristle cone pines. NV266 becomes CA166 that goes to Tall Pine. From there north on US295 to Mammoth. Devil's Postpile might interest you, although because of traffic restrictions it might not be worth it. Then comes Mono Lake and north of it Bodie State Historic Park which is worth a visit. Go to Yosemite by going over Tioga Pass.

The main problem is accommodations - you'd want to stay in Yosemite Valley at least one night and the probably isn't doable at this late date.
But you could stay one night on the east side (Lone Pine or someplace like that) the next day leave really early AM and drive across Tioga Pass and spend the whole day in YNP leaving well before sunset to stay that night somewhere along hwy 49 (Sonora/Angels Camp/etc) and finally drive across to SF.
If you decide to cross Death Valley - don't spend any time - just get across. It can be downright dangerous in the summer.

OH - there are frequent cancellations In Yosemite -- so first off I'd try for a room there preferably at Yosemite Lodge. But assuming you can't get in there - one night to the east on 395 and one night to the west along hwy 49 would be good.

If you can't get lodging in the valley www.yosemitepark.com then Lee Vining one night and either El Portal just outside the arch rock (west) entrance or Fish Camp/Oakhurst at the south entrance so you can check out Wawona & Mariposa Grove.
