Driving from Green River, UT to Albuquerque, NM - route?
I'll be driving in a moving truck to Albuquerque next week. We're stopping in Green River, UT (just north of Moab) and then driving from there to Albuquerque the next day.
Google Maps suggests we take US Highway 491 south from Colorado all the way down to I-40 (Gallup, NM), and then head east to Albuquerque. However, it's been suggested that instead we take a route east from 491 toward Durango, then into NM through Aztec and Cuba (Hwy 550) and then into Albuquerque that way. Google Maps says it's about 15 minutes slower that way...but in my experience, it's not always right. And we're driving a truck - hoping for less windy roads than scenery.
Anyone drive this route and have any feedback either way?
Thanks!

Microsoft's Streets and Trips says that it takes 10 minutes longer if you go through Gallup instead of cutting off at Shiprock and going through Farmington and Cuba. If you go through Durango it adds that 10 minutes back plus a few more.

Thanks - I see what you mean. When I plotted a route through Cuba with Google Maps, it took me up toward Durango but MS Maps avoids it and still goes through Cuba. That does look like the best way. I love Google maps for its display and control capabilities (and the ability to integrate them into your own website), but their driving directions aren't the best.

Andrew,
I live in the Four Corners area and drive to ABQ frequently where I used to live.
If you can wait until Thursday or Friday, I will give you the shortest route to take. [I am out of town right now and it will be easier for me to reply once I am home.]
Basically, drive from Moab to Cortez, then head toward Durango but turn off before you get to town and go through Hesperus. From there, you will go through Aztec, Bloomfield and then on into ABQ via 550. More details to follow. All roads ok with moving truck.
