I plan to leave from Fairfield County at 4:30 PM on Friday to drive down to Atlantic City. Driving time is estimated to be about 3.5 hours, but I'm thinking there is going to be a ton of traffic. I would much rather leave earlier, but unfortunately its not an option right now. Can anyone suggest what I can expect? Do you think I will be on the road for 5 hours, more or less? I just want to be prepared, and maybe convince my friends to be ready sooner if it will be a long ride in traffic.

Even on a good day, 3.5 hours is a stretch, in my opinion.
Yes, 5 hours is more like it, but it could be more. You'd be in the middle of rush hour on the NJ Turnpike and the GSP. Traffic around NYC is busy from at least 3pm on weekdays.
The train option: NE Regional #137 leaves Stamford @ 4:56 and gets to 30th St. station in Philadelphia before 8PM. New Jersey Transit #4641 leaves 30th St. at 8:45 and gets into Atlantic City at 10:21 The Amtrak fare is about $95 and the NJT fare is $10.
