driving distance duck key to key west

Would it be too great a distance to stay at Hawk's Cay and go to Key West for an evening?

It's about 65 miles. Doable but not desirable. You'll be going through Key Deer territory, as well. I think the speed limit there is about 35 at night...and the deer do roam in the evening.

We recently stayed at Hawk's Cay and drove to Key West for the day. Actually, first we stopped near Big Pine Key for a kayak tour and then went down to Key West. We were in Key West from about 4:00-Midnight or so and then drove back. That's a long day, and we wished we had more time in Key West. But if you drove there first thing in the morning, I think it would work fine. We don't recommend the drive late at night.

If you have kids, a day in Key West is good--the nightlife really gets going early evening, and I found it more "adult-oriented" than the rest of the Keys.
