driving breaks between San Diego and Sedona

We are driving between San Diego and Sedona in one day and need a couple of stops to break the journey. We thought we would stop at Dateland as it sounds fun and would like another stop once we have passed Phoenix. Any ideas gratefully received, we obviously dont want to stray too far from the main road. Many thanks

About the only thing that comes to mind is Montezumas Castle. Indian village ruins in the side of a cliff also some ground level they were excavating when we were there. Just a few miles off of I17 nice creekside area to get out and look around.

Avoid cental Phoenix by taking Loop 101 from the Interstate as you approach the city from the west. If you are coming east from San Diego, you have a choice of Interstates (I-10 or I-8), as you probably know. The Gila Bend cutoff(between Buckeye and Gila Bend) enables you to avoid going through central Phoenix. Depending on the time of day, you may run into a clog near the new community of Anthem, on the north side of Phoenix, about 10 miles north of the I-17 connection with Loop 101. We make the drive from Rancho Bernardo to Sedona in about 10 hours with a stop at Blythe for food and rest. Gas up on the Arizona side of the border, however, because California gas prices are much higher.

Hilary said they were doing the drive in one day so going through Phoenix and staying in Scottsdale isn't an option. I agree with USNR avoid Phoenix at all costs. We always use the Gila Bend cutoff. You mention Dateland as a break spot - I don't like dates but I have to say their date shake is something else again. That will give you enough energy to get to Sedona without a stop!!! For anyone traveling with a dog they have misted dog kennels in the shade by the restaurant which I think is a wonderful idea.
