Drive from Fargo, through Duluth, to the Upper Peninsula

Next week I'll be driving from Fargo, North Dakota to Duluth, Minnesota, and then proceeding east on US-2 and US-41 into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I have never been in this part of the U.S. before. I have one night to spend on the road, and I won't be in a big hurry, so I will have time to stop if there's something scenic or interesting along the way.

Can anyone recommend (1) where to stop for the night, (2) anything worth stopping for along the way, and (3) whether I should drive from Fargo to Duluth via MN-34/MN-200, or via US-10/MN-210?

Thanks in advance.

I suppose you could consider swinging northeast to Lake Itasca and the headwaters and then take US 2 from there to Duluth.

Back when we did this route we did go south to Itasca and waded across the Mississippi. Then we camped nearby at a beautiful lake.
We got to Duluth and put our feet in Lake Superior. Then camped along the shore of a lake in Michigan. We loved the UP and would loved to have spent more time there.

The Apostle Islands were on our plan until we had car trouble that put us behind. If you were only going to spend one night on the way that is where I would head to. Bayfield may be off the path, but the views are said to be worth it.

Thanks Dukey1 and InSandy. My trip is in progress now, and I've finally had time to check back and see your recommendations.

I am indeed planning to go to Bayfield and see the Apostle Islands, but for complicated reasons, I have to backtrack and do that after the UP. And I'm actually starting in Medora, ND, not Fargo, so driving all the way to Bayfield might be a bit far for one day anyway.

Maybe Lake Itasca is the place to stop. It's only barely off of the most direct route. I'll check it out!
