Dressing up for theatre in new york
We are wondering about a certain type of 'dress code' for going to the theatre in New York? Is it basically 'anything goes' ? By that, I mean dressy blue jeans, jacket type of outfit for women?

It is literally anything goes - unless you come in a swimsuit and plastic flip flops. I would let your choice of dress be guided by where you are going to dine - dress for that and the theater will be OK.
But be sure to have some sort of jacket or sweater no matter the temp outside - since some theaters are kept rather cold - esp if not completely full.
Unless you are going to a gala or charity event of some sort - in which case appropriate dress will appear on the invite.

There's no dress code, but that doesn't mean I'd dress in a sweaty T-shirt, shorts, and white sneakers as my seat-mate did during a show last summer. It's really a matter of what you feel comfortable with. I tend to dress up a bit rather than down. But that's me. Even for a matinee.

I agree with everyone, there's no need to be dressed up. I have seen people in shorts (in the summer), I have seen the vast majority of people in dressy casual (what an awful term, but I can't think of better), I have seen a very few people in cocktail attire; I can only assume they had come from or were going to a dressy affair.
