Fairview Heights is a suburb on the Illinois side of the river. Traffic across the river can really vary but it's only about 15 minutes away. Lots of chain restaurants and a shopping mall within a short distance.
The Millenium and the Hampton Inn are brand new hotels that are only one block from the dome. However with the Cardinals in the baseball playoffs you should check to make sure rooms are still available. (Busch Stadium is about 6 blocks south of the dome.)
The dome is on the north side of downtown along Washington Ave. There is a lot of development going on but at night the place can be a ghost town. However on a Friday and Saturday things should be better.
(They will soon be breaking ground on an entertainment/loft district to the north of the dome that should make the area more active. Plus the area between the dome and Lacledes Landing will soon be a new casino. No help for you now but to be remembered for future trips.)
The Millenium is far from 'brand new'. I recall staying there in ~1981 when it was the Clarion. The rooms aren't large. It's an old circular footprint hotel, but in a good location for those needing access to the tourist/business sites downtown.
Sorry about that Ted: typo.
The Renaissance is the brand new convention hotel on Washington.
The old Clarion went through a change a few years ago. The whole complex used to be one hotel but now the Millenium occupies the tall tower while the short tower is a Sheraton Four Points.
The main lobby area was remodeled: including large windows facing east towards the Arch. The rooms have been remodeled very nicely in the Millenium tower. Very modern upscale decor.
However the Sheraton has had much work done. Nothing too impressive. Kinda dumpy.
