Downtown Chicago Hotel for a nice getaway with wife

I have a meeting out at the airport in mid December and wanted to take my wife in town for a few days afterward and show her the city. I would like to make it really special for us. I heave read good reviews of the Drake, and The Burnham. She really enjoys tea! Thanks in advance!

Gene,

The Burnham is nice but some of the rooms can be very, very small. Still nice though. Drake is nice, but pretty expensive. I'd say go to wwww.hotrooms.com and check out the Le Meridien, Swisshotel, or the Talbott. Hot rooms has good deals.

I love the Whitehall Hotel in Chicago. It is on Deleware, just off Michigan Ave. A charming boutique hotel with good sized rooms and attentive staff.

I would suggest the fairmont. Great location right near the loop and a block away from the navy pier. Excellent rooms and a spacious bathroom.

My choice would be either of the W hotels, but ask for a high floor as that is the upgraded rooms.

If you ever get shut out for a hotel and end up looking at none luxury places, try the Hampton Inn near Michagan Ave. It caters to business and is clean and located right where you want to be. I think I paid an unbeleivable $99.00 per night!

Gene, can't help you out too much with the hotel (everytime I have gone to Chicago our hotel has been the "luck of the draw" on Priceline) However, if your wife likes to go to afternoon tea, go to tea at the Drake - it is lovely. Don't worry, it's not a just a "girly" thing, my husband and I were there in October and there were many men with there with their girlfriends/wives/families. Since you are going in December, you might want to make a reservation for tea, as it will be busy due to the holiday time. Enjoy!

We really enjoyed our corner suite at the Swisshotel over last 4th of July. The views of the water and Navy Pierare fantastic. The corner rooms are huge with the most comfortable bed/pillows we have ever had at a hotel and the service was terrific.

The Hotel Monaco on Wacker is beautiful. They serve wine from 5-7 daily in front of the fireplace and you get a gold fish as a pet when you check in. The rooms are really nice and comfy and you get a great robe.

The new Hyatt at the Watertower is fabulous. I hate the W chain.

The Park Hyatt in Chicago is heavily overpriced for what you get. It's a nice hotel, no question. But on occasions when I've checked you can get a suite at a hotel like the Peninsulaa which is much, much nicer for less than the price of a standard room at the Hyatt.
The Four Seasons is also usually less than the Hyatt...go figure on that one.

We are also heading up that way around the same time. While it's not really close to the Gold Coast, we got an $89 room at the Congress Plaza on Michigan Avenue for a room with two double beds. We stayed there nearly three years ago and really enjoyed it.

And the last time I was at the Congress Plaza, the "MR. LEATHER" convention was in full swing, and the array of nipple-piercings, studded collars and black leather chaps on skinny, pale bodies at 9 a.m. made me laugh out loud! Please note, I was just taking a shortcut through, not staying there, which is good because I would have choked on the breakfast buffet.

I worked in the loop for a couple years, I've heard some good things about the Russian Tea Room. I think it's on Michigan across from or near the Art Institute, I'd take in a bit of art Check out the impressionists..very romantic and get some tea. Tuesdays are free admission at the institute. enjoy
