Downtown Charleston: Far from the Train Station?
Hi
Looking up on MapQuest, it appears that the train station is located on N. Gaynor Avenue just north of North Charleston. It looks like a few miles away must but I might be mistaken. How much would it cost to catch a taxi from here to downtown Charleston? I hear Charleston is a very walkable city...would I be fine without a car and visiting?

I took Amtrak to Charleston in April 2001 and took a cab to my hotel in the historic district. While I don't remember how much it cost, it was not too far away. However, when our train got in, there were not cabs waiting at the station and you either had to call your own or have the ricket counter employee call one for you. Myself and about 5 other parties waited about 30 minutes before even one cab showed up. But they do come eventually-- I'm from the northeast and things just move at a faster pace up here.
If you are staying in the historic district, you will not need a car to get around. You can either walk or take the free trolley shuttles to points of interest.

Thanks for the heads-up. Maybe I'll call as the train approaches Charleston station for a taxi. Advice like yours is the kind of thing one does not find in a guidebook and reminds me why I appreciate Fodor's travel talk. Thanks for your help Rachael. Best wishes, DAN

From one Dan to another Dan. I don't know how much cabs cost in Charleston, but I doubt you would spend more than $15-$20 for it. Just take the cab to the north end of the historic district (near the visitor center) and pick up the trolley from there. The two locations are about ten miles apart according to a Web site I checked. I live in NC by the way, so I base my cab fare estimate on prices here. You might want to check out my travelogue on Charleston at www.oneeyed.homestead.com. It is from a 1999 trip. We are likely taking our daughter down for our second visit in the spring, so if you find anything particularly interesting I wouldn't mind hearing about it. Have a great trip to one of my favorite American cities.
