I will be travelling with a two year old in December. Any comments on the downtown aquarium? How are the exhibits, rides, and restaurant?

Well worth it, we spent several hours there with our 18 month old last summer, there's a train that drives through the shark tunnel, little one loved it. My only issue (I don't want to call it a gripe) was that the main entrance for the aquarium isn't adjacent to the outdoor activities. You leave the parking lot and go straight to the rides and attractions outside, but then you need to walk around the building to get in to the aquarium. We didn't find it well-marked, so we wasted a little time looking like idiots before we found a map. Maybe that was just us! We didn't eat there, the restaurant was packed and too long of a wait with a toddler. It seemed like there were a lot of birthday parties going on, might want to check ahead of time about reservations?
Thanks for the advice!
I don't know if you've already gone, but if you haven't then you should definitely skip eating at the restaurant. The attractions are great, but the food is subpar and overpriced. And,like txgirl said, the wait is long. I'd recommend eating somewhere else in downtown (some of the places in the Houston Pavillions or Discovery Green might be kid-friendly).
