I'm thinking of heading up for a weekend to door county next month with my mom. We'd like to stay somewhere that is close to restaurants, shops, nightlife (my mother still loves to go out and see jazz bands at night and so on) etc. and of course we both like spending time in nature (we just want to have something to do at night as well) but I'm not familiar with the place (this was her suggestion). For those who have visited Door County before, where would you suggest staying? I know that it is approaching the most popular time to visit, are we being too last minute about this?
I've been perusing the the door county website and have done a couple of Fodors searches, but I'm still a bit confused.

It's been 4 or 5 years since we've been to Door County, but I remember thinking when we were there that if I ever came back, I would want to stay in Fish Creek. It's quaint with shopping, close to the park. Goggle it and see what you think.
When you get up to the tip of DC, every place is close to everything else. It is only a few miles across, a few miles long.
Fish creeK & Ephram are closest to Pennsylia State Park. Egg Harbor is a little nicer town, but also more $$. Sister Bay is the largest town, and along the East side Baileys Harbor is probably one of the least $$, but still just a nice.
Don't worry about being close to something, choose a hotel based on your budget; at the top of the Door you are close to everything. During the summer is when all the places "make their money" so to speak and they are not cheap. We go for a week every Feb, when prices are down and crowds are small.
I have stayed in Ephram, Sister, & Baileys harbor and loved all the places. Door county has a website that lists all their hotels and ammenties. That is the best place to start.
I can recommend the Birchwood Lodge in Sister bay & Eagle Harbor Inn in Ephram. Both wonderful places. But there are tons of places that look interesting, like I said we only go there in winter when most places are closed so our choices are limited. Plus we always look for a room with a kitchen, so we can save a little $$ by eating some meals in our room.
