Rather than just go out Whale Watching in San Diego - consider going out on a sport fishing boat (3/4 day boat trip is about the same price - a little more) - and you will not only see whales, but also have a chance to catch some great fish.
Each time I have been out Sportfishing off the coast of San Diego - have met some nice/fun people - and this cute couple from the UK (pic below - she being from Wales - he from England - near their border) had a blast.
She has a family fishing background - and caught the first fish - a very nice Mahi-Mahi/Dorado (nothing like she/they had ever caught before) - but he was shut out until the last productive stop and brought in a very nice Yellowtail. He was way above Cloud 9 and they both could not have been happier - smiling very wide for the next hour or so.
They are on a three week US holiday before they return to the UK to teach school.
Met another nice guy - a salty/experienced fisherman - Tony - who has a Sushi Restaurant in North County - Go Go Japansushi - and he is Chinese.

And there were other nice people on our relatively light load - only 20 fishermen - including Ben - a surfer who goes out on the huge waves at Todos Santos - and a couple (originally from Washington State - who stay at their condo in Coronado) and they took their very well mannered 11 year old son out.
Unfortunately - they didn't catch any fish - be what a day on the water - as we saw two different sets of Big Blue whales, Rizzo Dolphins ( they are big/beefy dolphins that look something like an Orca/Killer whale http://tinyurl.com/c3q2etr ), flying fish - and also - on the way back in - some Common Dolphins were jetting alongside the boat and also playing in front of the bow - riding the wave it produces.
All in all - just a magnificent day, and yes, I was lucky enough to catch the biggest fish (pic holding it by the gill) - a very nice yellowtail. ![]()

Forgot to add: The sashimi and sushi (my wife again made great sticky ricy) were incredible - as was the lightly seared yellowtail. Hey - only 7 hours removed from the sea to your dinner plate - and it's hard to find anything fresher than that.
I agree that you might catch some whales while on a fishing boat. You might want to call the sport fishing company and inquire if they are sighting any whales as they fish. December through April are the best time for whale watching.
Good luck!
Sure - good advice to check around. The big company for Whale Watching is Hornblower http://www.hornblower.com/hce/port/overview/sd+whalewatching - and if it's all rough that day - their big boats are a bit smoother, but the sport fishing boats ride pretty well.

If you are at all prone to sea-sickness - or concerned about possibly being so - get a "patch" before you go (small round band-aid looking medicine - you put on behind your ear) - and there is now even a prescription drug you can take while you are underway if you start feeling a little queasy, but sorry - I can't remember the name at the moment.
Normally - if you go out on deck - and try to get some fresh air - it helps.
There are four main sport fishing companies (and a couple also have boats just for whale watching):
Fisherman's Landing, Pt. Loma Sportfishing (the one I just went out on but I have been out with all 4 main ones), H&M Landing (all close together at the Pt. Loma sportfishing docks) - and Seaforth - which is over by Mission Bay. Click on their names on this fishing report webpage, http://www.sportfishingreport.com/ but you have to find H & M separatley: http://www.hmlanding.com/
And right now - big Blue whales are off the coast.
Last night - again had Sushi (it's called Hamachi when made with Yellowtail) and Sashimi (not quite as super as the first night - but still very good) and pan seared Yellowtail (a little cooking oil/soy sauce and sesame seeds) - and as they do in Hawaii when they catch a nice fish - having some friends over 2nite for a "fish fry"
Tom,
Do you ever let anyone else post?
It seems like your posts are streams of unconsciousness. One after another.
I say again that I think you had too many drugs in the '70s.
I go whale watching at spas.
For the less adventurous, the Seal Tour is an amphibious vehicle that goes into the Big Bay (aka San Diego Harbor) for an interesting live-narrated tour of the sights you can see from the water. No whales, but plenty interesting.
Inappropriate post, Rasta. With a screen name like yours, and you say someone else "had too many drugs in the 70s"??
Tom, thanks for the tip. Sounds like a good way to get out on the water.
Thank you Peaceout. And for the "record" - I did partake of some "herbs" in the 70's, but other than some joints - didn't really do anything stronger. Others did 4 sure and too much LSD can fry the brain.

Uno Mas - again had the marvelous Yellowtail last night - together with a tasty spinach salad my sister made - and then - went to the Comedy Store in La Jolla.
Sometimes - when they have a headliner appearing - such as Ian Edwards - http://lajolla.thecomedystore.com/ who was very funny - as were the other comedians -
guess they want to make sure there is a full house/audience, so used some free tix they sent us - but you are supposed to buy 2 drinks apiece, which we did.
A very lovely night in San Diego - 4 sure.
PO - there was a thread dedicated to tsd. I won't go into details, but the post isn't coherent.
So that makes your post ok, Rasta?
Rastaguy: I appreciat your usually witty comments - but sometimes you do try my patience as some other nitwits in here have done.
Oui - I may be overly enthustastic at times, and sometimes post in sequence as I have to go find some information for the particular subject (and for the vast majority of the time - I know firsthand about the information any such webpage is providing) but I don't believe I have been incoherent.
And I have received a number of copliments back from the visitors/travelers seeking information. (I may be old fashioned - but I hate to refer to them as OP).
tsd - you always seem to have run-on posts. Are you aware of other threads that have singled you out as a difficult poster with you as the subject?
You say you have been an attorney. Act like one. Get your thoughts together, organize, and then succintly post what it is that you want, just ONCE, not several times in a row.
As for peaceout - if he/she is too sensitive, the so be it.
Rastaguy: Are you a trust baby?
Rastaguy,
So why did you even bother reading this post?
spirobulldog - because my state isn't on fire.
tsd - what's a trust?
Rasta: You do sound like a trust baby, 4 sure.
One who sampled too much LSD?
