Don Cesar in St Pete's Beach
Anybody out there ever stay at the Don Cesar in St Petersburg? What is it like? We are between that area and Longboat Key off Sarasota. We are looking at the Hilton there. My kids are 14 and 17 and we are looking for 2 quiet days on a nice beach in mid-April after family obligations in Tampa.

The Don, as it's called locally, is the best hotel on St Pete Beach. It's a restored 20's era hotel--looks like a sugary pink confection from a distance. Interior is very traditional and has recently undergone a soft renovation. It has a huge pool/deck area with bench swings overlooking the dunes and beach, plus an excellent beach with jet ski rentals right there. Their main dining room has an great reputation.
The Hilton doesn't compare with the Don, but the water in Sarasota is just a little prettier...somehow changes color between here and there. Shopping is better in that area and there is a wider range of good restaurants. If you are flying out of TIA, though, you've of course added drive time back.
By mid April hopefully this "coldest winter on record" for FL will be behind us and it'll be beautiful.

Cathy---
If you want to keep from looking and sounding like a tourist, you'll call it "St. Pete Beach."
Every local knows that only tourists call it "St. Pete's Beach." We even went out of our way to change the name of the city from "St. Petersburg Beach" to "St. Pete Beach."
Probably boring to you---sorry.
Have a great time, and come back often!

The Don is a good hotel for the reasons stated above. It's public areas and facilities are lovely. However, I find the rooms to be typical of an older hotel. I think I would opt for LBK. You will find more there to interest the kids. Mote Marine is a great place to visit. In addition to the Hilton, there are some very nice places to stay. You should look into The Colony, and the LBK Club for comparison's sake.
