Dolce Skamania Lodge - Washington side of Columbia River Gorge
Has anyone stayed at this property? We got a very good rate by calling the hotel direct and it actually had space available on a Friday and Saturday night in early August. This surprised me because almost every other hotel in the region (Troutdale, Hood River, the Dalles), was completely booked. Any input on this resort would be appreciated.

We've stayed a couple of times, the last time about 4 years ago. It was very nice. They have a great outdoor hot tub and nice indoor pool. There is a less expensive little pub next to the restaurant that serves some of the restaurant fare, if you want something more casual. Also a very large patio for meteor watching if you go when the Perseid meteor shower occurs later in August.

This place caters to conferences, which may explain room availability. We have stayed there a few times in rooms that don't face the Columbia River. If you can get a good rate that includes breakfast, it is a good deal. I agree with the suggestion that you opt for the less expensive dining option.

We stayed there 2 years ago and it was nice. It's a very pretty and quiet setting above the river. Rustic interiors. I agree with the suggestions about the Friday night seafood buffet (very good!) and a river view room. And in addition to the indoor pool there's golf, tennis,a small spa and an assortment of nice walking paths.
The Columbia Gorge Hotel across the river in Hood River is very nice too. It's a lovely historic property. Again, try for a river view and have their breakfast...I think it's 9 courses and all wonderful!

We stayed there over Memorial Day weekend. We had a nice room with a fireplace, but no view. The only negative thing was freight trains run between the resort and the river and the train whistles go off all night. You can't see the train, it is down the bluff from the hotel, but the whistles were loud enough to disturb our sleep. Bring earplugs.
