Does the Airfare from Albany,NY to Key West,FL ever go down??

Hi,We would like to fly right into Key West and rent a car but right now the airfare for September is $375 RT per person with taxes/fees included.Doesn't that seem like alot to pay for airfare??
We can fly into Fort Lauderdale for $117 RT PP but then we have a 4 hour drive ahead of us.And knowing how Florida traffic can be that's not what we want to do.
Has anyone seen the airfare any lower?? Any chance it might go down? Since September is off-season I thought that was kinda high.
Thanks for any comments or suggestions.
Debbie

While Albany has very good rates for the routes on which several airlines (especially Southwest) compete, once you stray from those routes, typically high rates prevail.

If Southwest was not serving Albany, the rates would be much higher, as evidenced by the rates at SWF, just 60 miles south of Albany.

I have found airfare for routes I fly often have been creeping up over the past year and there are fewer "sales" unless you want to go to someplace like Anchorage in January.

If it were me I would check fares into PBI (West Palm), FLL or MIA and drive the rest of the way to save the money - but you will have to decide what is more important time/aggravation or money.

Any trip to Florida in September runs risk of hurricanes, so make sure you understand and accept any non-refundable rules before you book. (Another reason to pick on south Florida larger city that is less expensive)

Thanks for your replies.
I guess I have two options:Fly to Ft Lauderdale, rent a car and drive down to the Keys;OR
Fly down to Ft Lauderdale and then take American out of Miami if they have a sale going on...

Hi Deb. Saw you were on the DIS, too. Glad I found you here since I can't post KW stuff on the DIS. I have a surprise trip planned for DH and I to KW 9/20-9/24. I sat on the idea of buying airfare. Then when I saw Delta's fare on www.1800cheapseats.com I snagged it! I paid $342 pp (all fees/taxes included) from DTW-EYW. We stop in ATL both ways. No, we are not on turboprops. We are on jets all the way. I have seen that fare almost up to $500!! What dates are you looking at? AA had some god awful flight times but the fares were cheap. Delta's flight times are awesome. Where are you looking to stay? We are staying at Douglas House. He is not getting his surprise until 9/5..that is our anniversary. Let me know what dates you are looking at. The weekend before our trip is Hog's Breath Bike Week and were advised to stay away then. I realize it is hurricane season, but I bought trip insurance thru TravelGuard. Is there anywhere else fairly close that you can fly out of?

Another option is to fly into FLL...and then book a separate flight from FLL to EYW....currently around $195 RT on USAIR and Continental....they have several non-stops a day so you should be able to find one that would fit your schedule. Total cost would be around $315 plus no rental car or drive.

Like shelbyjosh said, if you can find it cheap though, the flights out of Atlanta on Delta are great.

Delta flies jets direct from Atlanta.

I don't think I've ever seen it drop below $300 in the last 24 months.

$375 sounds like a bargain to me. We only live 90 miles from Key West -- due north of it, and can't seem to get a flight for under $200!

Wow.You guys (and gals) are great!I am checking into every single one of your suggestions!
I didn't expect so many great responses.
shelbyjosh: We originally wanted to go Sept.6-9th but the Eden House only has availability for their 2nd floor Deluxe Conch House room from Sept. 10-13th.And we also looked into renting the Seashell Cottage which is managed by Lazy Lane Cottages. It also was not available on our first choice of dates but is from Sept. 10-13th.We would be looking for airfare for Sept.9-13th.
I'm beginning to think something big is going on that week of the 4th to the 8th.I know it's Labor day week but something must be going on.
I did check into a few other airports but they run about the same as Albany.
I wouldn't even mind $250 or $270 a ticket inc. taxes but when it get's up over $300 it is way too high for me.
That is so great you able to find the right priced tickets especially since it's an anniversary gift...Congrats by the way!
I did check out the Cheap Seats link and did not find anything under $300.
Thanks for all the help.
milemarker0,Yes I'll definitely look into two seperate flights. If AA has another sale maybe I can catch that for my dates.
gotravel,I haven't looked at the Delta website but I'll give that a try.
bayougal,Thanks for giving me the heads up on the airfare sale to Florida!Definitely worth a look.

What Neo says! We've paid about as much as that making reservations way in advance (Delta I believe) and flying down from Tampa!! Anywhere into Key West is sky high.

Neopolitan and Malesherbes,Wow.Trying to fly into Key West for cheap used to be like trying to fly into Atlantic City (from Albany,NY) for anything lower than $350 RT....
Just seems like alot to me.If I was only 90 miles away I would drive down.
I'm not a great flyer (I used to be) so flying on one of those propellered driven planes is not fun for me.
I think driving from Ft Lauderdale is looking better and better.Unless I can find a really good airfare sale we'll be driving down or not go at all.
Thanks.
Debbie

Deb...I just checked your 9/9-9/13 dates thru www.bookingbuddy.com and then clicked on ultimatefares.com and found 2 tickets for around $500 total. Go fast and check. I believe the outbound flight leaves 5 am-ish and I think it is on US Air??? GO, go fast....please post what you find!!!

Oooh...just checked again. There are about 5-6 different selections under $300 per person. We are staying at Douglas House. It is near Southernmost POint and looks beautiful. We got a suite for the price of a deluxe room. Check out that website, girl!!

shelbyjosh,Thanks for your efforts to find some low fares for us.I really appreciate it.Unfortunately the $252 round-trip per person did not include taxes/fees.So when I went to book the total was $709.60.
Thanks for looking for me.

Deb...does $679 out-the-door sound better? It is on UsAir for $339 pp. That is really close to what I paid. I wouldn't complain about that fare at all. I went to www.mobissimo.com and let it run its cycle. Then the top choice should be 1800cheapseats and click on that one. $339 is better that $375!!!! Post what you find!

Don't know if all planes flying into KW are like this, but beware. I wondered why my husband was in row 7 when I was in row 8...it's because there was one seat per "row" on our plane. We had an early morning flight and it takes a few cups of coffee to get me stirring. About the same time they were boarding, I decided I needed to use the rest room but thought I'd wait until we got up. Well...forget about that...there were no bathrooms and that darned plane vibrated...a lot! LOL What a miserable trip. Funny now; not so funny then! Buyer beware!!

UA, NW and CO use the same Gulfstream International flights from various FL airports to Key West (EYW), on 19-seat Beech 1900 turboprop. These don't have restrooms or flight attendants.

AA uses the large ATR72 turboprop from Miami.

USAirways use large Embraer E170 regional jet from FLL mainly, but also MCO.

DL uses ERJ 135/145 regional jets from Orlando, but also larger CRJ700 from Atlanta.

I fly 40 weeks a year, live in FL and flights are going up instead of down. Remember when $99 was available? LOL. Quickie......why rent a car? KW is a walking town or scooter rental at best. If you haven't already booked, look up Cuban Suites Hotel on the east end of Duval. 2nd floor Suite has huge balcony, 2 private bedrooms and 2 baths. Full kitchen. Great place.

Debden, we are only 90 miles away by air (over water). To drive takes a good 5 to 6 hours from here.
I miss the old days when Cape Air flew from Naples to Key West in about 20 minutes and charged $29.
