Does anyone know of so-called 'home stays' in the TANGLEWOOD area?

My husband and I plan to go on a sentimental journey this summer and plan to attend a concert at Tanglewood in Lenox MA, like we did on our first date, 35 years ago. There is, however, nothing sentimental about today's hotel/ motel prices in the area anymore we discovered. Nothing under $250-$300 a night, that is if we are lucky because most of the hotels are already booked solid.
Back in 1978 we decided to go on the spur of the moment and found a very comfortable room with someone who rented a few rooms during the Tanglewood season. I wonder if anyone knows if these private initiatives perhaps still exist. I'll try to find out from the Lenox tourist office but thought I'd ask the Fodorites first.

We also looked at self catering houses but most of them are for larger groups and those prices are truly staggering. We tried via VRBO; does anyone have an alternative suggestion?

What a nice idea!

Getting tickets can be non-trivial, so get your concert selected soon. Weekends are more difficult than if you during the week, and traffic back to Boston after a Sunday afternoon concert is epic, possibly double the normal time.

I would ask at the tourist offices in Stockbridge, Great Barrington, and other nearby communities as well as Lenox, both towards Pittsfield and across the NY line.

Keep looking for cancellations at places that interest you.

Try www.pilgrim inn.net. Only place we have been able to stay on the weekend for 1 night during tangle wood. Most places require 2 night minimum.

Have you checked the Monument Mountain Motel in Great Barrington? I have not stayed there, but the location is good, and I think its much less expensive than $250. what about the Holiday Inn express, also in Great Barrington?

I'm a little surprised you are finding everything booked up. I know they are busy in the summer, and some very popular places will be booked already. But its still early. Are you, in fact, running into 2 night minimums, and getting nothing available because you are trying to plug in 1 night in an online form? or maybe you are sticking to particular towns like Lenox and Stockbridge? Lee, Great Barrington, maybe Pittsfield, should all be good as well.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. Yep, got the tickets so that is one problem solved already.
Yes, you are right china_cat, we were initially looking for a place to stay for just one night during a weekend and that's why we got negative replies.
We have decided to extend our stay now. Have looked at www.airbnb.com
and this website does offer more affordable, albeit mostly self catering, places to stay. Not a problem because we'll be having all our meals out anyway. We are so much looking forward to this trip!!! Thank you all again for your time and interest!
