Does anyone have a place on Cape Cod?

My sister and I plan to take our Mom on a mother-daughter trip to celebrate her 60th birthday. Having a hard time locating a rental that sleeps 3 with 1-2 bedrooms for $300 a night. Does anyone have a place to rent or know of a rental prop avail for a few nights in early August?

Very hard to find an August rental for less than a week, as you clearly know.

Go later in the month, maybe the last week, because many families have to leave around the 16th so their kids can go back to school. This opens up properties, but house owners still expect Saturday to Saturday rentals through Labor Day and in to September.

Where have you looked for cottages or hotels?

Look at the motels/hotels along 6A in North Truro. Some are close to your price range and many have kitchenettes. Mostly not fancy but in a lovely location, on the water near Ptown for dining options.

Just want to be sure you realize that many places to rent and stay on Cape Cod do not have air conditioning. We stayed in a cottage in N. Truro last July that had no AC, which we did not realize til we arrived as every other rental we have ever done (many) have always had AC. It happened to be a very hot week and it was very uncomfortable.

So if that matters to you, ask about AC.

We finally found something via airbnb, but it's an hour from the Cape, which is fine. We're just thrilled to have a nice, affordable place within striking distance. Thanks for the feedback. Next time, we'll be better prepared and plan further out!

An hour out of the Cape could put you miles away (almost in Boston). Especially long drive if you're there on a weekend.

Try the Even'tide Motel in Wellfleet.

Agree with cw.

Don't do this rental if it requires crossing the Cape bridges on Saturday morning when rentals change over or Sunday afternoon when everyone leaves to go back to work.

There are plenty of other places to go in SE Mass and lots of other beaches like Horseneck but if your heart is set on the Cape, being an hour away won't help you.

Hm. We already bit the bullet. The rental is in RI. We plan to do a day trip to Martha's Vineyard on Friday. Other than that, we're not especially set on the Cape. Will go to Newport for a day and pretty much play things by ear.

My big question now is should we take the Fast Ferry from Kingstown, RI or drive to Wood's Hole for the Steamship Authority ferry? Fast Ferry is pricey ($80 rt) and would limit our time on the island from about 10:30/11 a.m. to 6:30/7 p.m. If we take the SA ferry, we'd have a lot more flexibility for a lot less $, but we'd have a heck of a drive/parking hunt...

Parking for the big ferry is $15 or more per day, I,m not sure about the fast ferry. There was a fast ferry from Quanset point, is that the one you are thinking of? In any case if the weather blows up the big ferry will be much more likely to go and will be more stable.

You'll have to make the decision for yourself about which ferry to take, but be aware that if you're going on a Friday, get an early start if taking the ferry from either Woods Hole or Falmouth. Traffic-wise, that will be a busy day heading over the bridge and onto the Cape.

The ferry out of Falmouth is convenient -- parking within walking distance of the dock -- but if memory serves, they only take cash and no reservations. You buy your ticket and sit in the waiting area, first come, first served.

Parking for the Vineyard is at off site lots, not at the terminal in Woods Hole. You need to get to the lot an hour before sailing in order to park and catch the shuttle to the boat.

Find the details at

https://www1.steamshipauthority.com/visitors/parking

You don't need a reservation to walk on the Steamship ferries, so you could wait and see whether the weather allows you to take the fast ferry from Quonset Point. My cousins took it and loved it.

If you can get up and out of the house early, Friday is not a bad day to take the Woods Hole ferry. Traffic picks up significantly after noon.

You can also fly from Providence.

what about the passenger ferry from New Bedford? It's closer than going all the way to Woods Hole. Perhaps the schedule will be better than the Quonset point ferry.

emalloy - Yes! That's the one! Thanks for pointing out the reliability factor in the event of weather changes. Something to consider, for sure.

vincenzo - Thank you for the alternative ferry option. I like the sound of it, except buying ticket and waiting first come first serve. Hm. Now that I think of it, isnt that kind of the same situation with the Steamship Authority?

ackislander - Hitting the road about 7 would be ideal. That should put us at the lot by 8 in advance of the 9:30 departure. Thinking we'll play it by ear. We could get in town and decide QP is the better option.

china_cat - I looked into that one. It would save us about $60 total with the same limited schedule as the QP fast ferry. Still an option ...

QP is the same as Point Judith? There's a fast ferry out of Point Judith in RI that friends have taken to MV. The summer weather has been stellar in the Northeast; hoping the trend continues through the hurricane season! But your trip must be over by now; how was your visit?
