Do you repeat destinations on your holiday trips ?

Funny you ask this because I think of it everytime I'm planning a trip. I tend to want to go to new places rather than repeat them simply because I have a long list of places I want to visit. Future trips would be Hawaii, Greece possibly with Italy, Ireland, Alaska...

There are definitly places my husband and I have been that we want to go back to. He's always saying "We should go back to..." I went to Tahiti when we were engaged with my sister and I definitly want to go back with him. I'd repeat that trip more likely sooner that later compared to a place like the Florida Keys or Playa Del Carmen.

As for repeating in the states I was in San Diego in Aug/Sept two years in a row and felt I have been there enough now even though there are still things I would enjoy doing or seeing.

We try to go away 3 times a year(one of these trips will be twin centre) and manage to go to two new places but we always return to at least one favourite!

It depends on where you are going - if a particular route takes us thru or near some lovely spots - we will revisit. If they were so-so, we will bypass.

Our upcoming trip this month will be about 50% new but seeing some spots at a different time of year will make them (almost)new again.

I tend to go back to places in the US, but not Internationally. For example, I love Arizona and have been there several times. I also am dying to go back to Hawaii and Charleston. But, when it comes to traveling abroad, I want to "check off" as many countries as possible. I have not been to the same country more than once, other than Canada and Mexico.

I return to places when there is more to see and experience than I was able to the first go round. Perhaps your irritable friends are quantity over quality types.

We usually go for new places. Although we usually go to central Oregon each summer, once we are there we always venture out to new places to hike/backpack. Our trips to Europe are always to new places...and we are headed there next Christmas and trying to decide which country. We would love to go back to places we loved...but there are just too many other places that we want to experience right now.

This is always a battle between DH and I. He loves to go to the same places, see the same shows, eat at the same restaurants, over and over on the theory that he knows he likes it. I prefer to try different things. After 27 years we have managed to strike some small amount of balance. Some trips are sacrosanct and I don't even try to change anything about them. I plan some other new things to try. Although when I plan something he likes, it becomes one more place that he will want to go back to. Aaaaargh!

Have you ever noticed that Key West seems to be one of those places people keep going back to?

What is it about Key West that people return to? We've never been to the Keys.
We have made repeated trips to Hawaii because it never fails to please us.

The funny thing is that almost everywhere I go somewhere I like, I say "I would love to come back here again some day," but I rarely go back. I do have a list of places in my head I want to visit again or new places I know I will want to visit more than once or that I would like to revisit with my kids. Among these are: NYC (already twice in one year), Paris, Beijing, Hong Kong, Gettysburg (already twice), Prague, Rome, Venice, London, Charleston (already twice), and the Berner Oberland in Switzerland. For me, photography is a great reason to revisit. Most photographers take better pictures of something or somewhere as their familiarity grows. Also, when you have to spend less and less time running around to "see the sights," you can relax, immerse yourself more in a location, or spend more time setting up good photos.

My wife and I recently hung a map of the world on a cork board and then marked with pins all of the places that we have been together and separately. We have visited a lot of places in the US and Canada plus much of Europe, and parts of SE Asia, Latin America and Africa. What surprised us was how much open (unvisited) space there was on the map. This for us is a great argument for not repeating a destination - there is just too much to see and too little time to do it.

Our vacations are road trips and after 32 years we've covered alot of ground especially in the western United States.

I love going to some of the most scenic places over and over. We go to Utah about every other year. Even though we go to the same place we try to find new things to see or do.

I would love to drive to Alaska again. I never tire of going to Yellowstone. We've been to Yosemite 27 times in the last 27 years, but then we go just for long weekends and not our whole vacation.

We still have a lot on our to do list but most of that is in the Eastern Untied States and will probably have to wait until we retire and can spend a lot of time on the road.

We try to do both.

We go back to places that we have been before and then use that as a base to explore places near there that we haven't been before.

We travel quite a bit, and there's always a new place to visit on the horizon, but we DO have a few favorites that we try to return to every year or every other year:

India, Greece (especially Santorini), Portugal, Paris, Northern California, and New Orleans (this is our adopted hometown, we visit two or three times a year).

Yes, certain places deserve MANY return trips IMO..esp London, Paris, NYC. Some national parks eg Yosemite Yellowstone, Zion, we will return to again. And I would like to go back to Alaska. I am a UK nut, and we tend to go there a lot. Been to Italy 3 times. I just tend gravitate to my special places. I do like new...but am a little biased to the old faves.

Two or three of our vacations per year are ski weeks, and we try new places, as well as go back to old favorites.

We love to go to NYC for a theater weekend every year or two--the shows are different, and that's why we're going.

Otherwise, we like to explore new places. There are so many places that we want to see, that we don't want to "waste" time going back to someplace we're already been.

I'm not sure why so many people like to go back to Key West. We went to the keys for our honeymoon (courtesy of family) and enjoyed it but we stayed in Key Largo. If we go back, and we were just talking about this the other day, we would stay somewhere else and closer to Key West. We didn't spend a lot of time in Key West so I guess we feel we missed some things. Also didn't eat at a lot of memorable restaurants which I regret (although we did have good seafood). The water is beautiful, great sunsets, loved driving on hgwy 1 and snorkeling there. I'd still hop over to Hawaii for the all that plus great beaches before the keys though!

One place I can visit repeatedly is San Francisco. I just love that city, there are still many things I haven't seen. I don't get tired visiting attractions I have already seen several times. Additionally, the drive from San Francisco down to San Simeon is so beautiful I could definitly do that again.

Oh my god! I also get this same comment from friends/co-workers. They'll ask why do we travel to the same place? Like we've been to Maui 3 times, Disney- 4 times, Vegas 4 times etc... I don't mind traveling to the same place. My motto is at least I know we will have a good time going to a place you enjoyed. Sometimes it's nice going to a familiar place. You know what ya like and what ya don't like. I guess it just depends on the traveler and what makes them happy. I'll admit, if I could afford to go to Hawaii every year, I would!

My answer to the original questions is "Yes."

Each trip I try to see something old I know I will enjoy and also something new to me. This year, the new was the ferry trip along the Inside Passage from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy. Not what I expected.

On the other hand, we visited Wales and I loved it.
