We're flying to Fort Lauderdale on December 1st, planning to spend a week exploring the Florida Keys. We have a car rented, but we do not have any hotels booked at this point. Two questions: first, do we need to have reservations for places to stay in the Keys at this time of year? And second, can you recommend where we should stay? We are in our early 30's, looking for opportunities to hike/walk, snorkel and explore.
Any help is much appreciated.
Do we need to book hotels in the Florida Keys in advance in December?

Oh yes, as soon as possible, before they all sell-out.
Depends,
You are early enough in December that you might be OK. But, it is a chance and you may end up in something that you don't really want.
Enjoy,
Duane
For snorkeling you might want to check out Key Largo. The Best Western has snorkeling excursions at the hotel but if you don't want to go with them, the hotel is still located on the marina heading into the ocean and great to watch snorkeling, fishing and gambling boats moving in and out.
In summer we did not have reservations anywhere. I am glad we didn't cause in Ft.Myers I walked in and out 2 or 3 places before I settled on a place. The keys will more than likely have an abundant of places that will be acceptable. I think it is still safe to just go and without a plan. It is a lot more fun.

Thanks for the tips -- we'll follow up on your recommendations.
