If you're staying at the MGM, you will be able to walk to the Luxor, New York New York, Tropicana, and Excaliber. Also, there is a Coke world thing and a great arcade next to the MGM. Treasure Island is not really within walking distance,(unless you feel like taking a good walk, keeping in mind that in mid July it's about 110 in the shade) but there is good bus service, and there are always taxi cabs.Once you're up by Treasure Island, then the Flamingo Hilton, Caesars, Mirage and Harrahs are all within walking distance. Circus, Circus is at the top of the strip, and you would definately need to take either the bus or a taxi. If you're not going out to Hoover Dam or anywhere, I can't really see that you would need a car, especially if you're on the strip. You don't want to drive on the strip! Yikes! And Please don't walk over the freeway with your 8 year old to get to the Rio. There's a shuttle that I believe leaves from Ceasars Hotel. You really should take in the "Parade in the Sky" over there. You'll all like it, especially the little one! Have fun!

No, I agree you will not need a car. Parking is a problem and traffic is horrible. You can take the free tram from the MGM to the other end of the strip. There you can visit a group of nice hotels. I highly recommend you take your 8 year old to see Lance Burton the magician. He is at the Monte Carlo our favorite family hotel. A ticket is $35 and you really get your money's worth. He also has kids up on stage as well as signs autographs after the show. Our whole family, young and old, loved his show adn lovely new theatre. Have Fun!

No need to rent a car in Vegas if you're not planning a scenic drive. The cheapest route is the bus service. Cabs are better at night. Both are plentiful. I recommend visiting the Luxor (the 3-part show is worthwhile. If given a choice, go to the 1st and 2nd sections, and forget the 3rd. Your 8 year old will enjoy it and so will you.) The Forum in Cesear's Palace is fun, and free. Planet Hollywood is there. The atmosphere is fun, the food was great, and if you time it right, there won't be much of a wait. Prices are surprisingly reasonable, too. Our favorite show was Cirque d' solei (sp?) at Treasure Island. Not your typical circus, for sure. But if your child is into dance, gymnastics , music, or theatre, the show is amazing. Don't even bother with the attractions at the Stratosphere (the space needle-looking hotel.) The attractions are often closed for repairs, and not that great anyway. There is a Wet & Wild water park at the Stratosphere's end of the strip, though. Have fun!

My husband and I just got home from our trip to Las Vegas. We stayed at the Excalibur (never would again) and we walked everywhere. I agree with the other messages- you don't need a car. We found the walk to Treasure Island to be a nice walk but we didn't have any children with us and we wanted the exercise. Also, the weather was perfect - in the high 60's or 70's. Be sure to take good walking shoes. The free tram that was referenced takes you to Bally's which is just about 1/2 way to Treasure Island. We did take a cab one night and the fare from the Riveria to the Excalibur including tip was 10.00 so it could get expensive if you plan on using cabs all of the time! I saw the CAT (public bus) running all of the time and I believe the fare was 1.50. We didn't use the bus but a local told us it was fairly reliable and always looked crowded.
