Oops . . . I think I forgot to put this under the Hawaii listings. Sorry if it shows up twice.
I checked sidestep.com and every other site I could find and seem to have found a considerably lower rate through www.discounthawaiicarrental.com. Similar to Hotwire, they go through major companies, but you don't know which company until you've booked. BUT, you can cancel the reservation and there's no prepayment required.
On Kauai, they've booked me with Thrifty; on the Big Island, with Budget. The rates are almost $50 less than anywhere else I found.
Has anyone used this company? Any feedback would be appreciated! (I leave next Tuesday!!!)

My husband and I have used them on several trips to the BI. No problems.
I called their 800 number and the recording said that they would get back to me if I would leave a number OR if I wanted to go ahead right then I could call Thrifty and give them a price code. I called Thrifty and the price code was better than any other discount for which I might be eligible. I reserved a car for February in Maui at a price I haven't seen bettered - yet. I can still change if I want to. Good luck! If you want the Thrifty # or the code I can post it.
We used them last year on our trip to Maui and Oahu, as per Heretoday_Gonetomorrow suggested and it was a good deal!
Oops! That's heretoday_gone2maui!
I just got a reservations with them for the Big Island in late October -- 10 days for $281.69 (admittedly, this is for an economy rental, but it's just the two of us, so it should be fine, and will probably get better gas mileage than a bigger car.)
This is easily the best deal I've found.
WOOHOO, I can use this info--glad you posted this question, Songdoc.
WOW! I'm so glad to get all the great feedback -- and to help others who are looking for low rates.
The best deals for me on rental cars on Maui and Oahu have been w/ Priceline. Check www.biddingfortravel.com
Just used them to book car on Big Island. Price came out to exactly the same as Hotwire, but both are well below anything I could find, so good deal!
I like the fact there is no prepayment and you can cancel at anytime. Of course, if I have to cancel or modify, I'll see what happens then.
