Dinner options in Marin and near Calaveras Big Trees

Hi Everybody,

An out of state friend will be visiting this weekend. He's never been to northern California and I'm planning day trips to Marin Headlands and beaches for one day and to Calaveras Big Trees State Park the next day. I'd appreciate suggestions on places for dinner in these areas. I'm a vegetarian and he's not.

Thanks in advance.

you are going to Calaveras big Trees there and back in one day form a location that's also close to Marin? Lot of driving...

if you like raw foods the Cafe Gratitude in San Rafael (it's a small chain) is quite good. For Lovely Cuban food, Taco Jane's in San Anselmo is also very good - veggie options but other items as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

We'll be traveling from the Sacramento area - that's the advantage and disadvantage of Sacramento - it's about a two hour drive to everywhere. But he really wants to visit both areas so we'll just drive a lot for a couple days. The scenery will be worth it.

Why don't you think about getting a motel room in Marin so you can see more and drive less. That way you can also see Muir Woods, Sausalito, The Civic Center (Frank Lloyd Wright), and the heron nesting spot (did that a few years ago, and you litterally walk up into the hills so you are eye to eye with the herons, green and blue).

There is actually quite a bit to see in the area, so enjoy!

travelbuff - I did suggest doing an overnight trip but he really would like to go to both areas - and he's never been here before - and likes driving - so I agreed, but perhaps I can convince him to stay overnight in Marin after we get there. I used to live near Marin and love going back to visit.

He initially wanted to go to Yosemite as a daytrip. At least I was able to convince him that Yosemite was just too far without an overnight stay.

We toured Calaveras Big Treed on one of our wine tasting trips to Murphy's. We used to go to Murphy's often, but haven't been there for a while so take these suggestions with that in mind. We liked eating at the V located in the Victoria Inn B&B. We have eaten several times at Grounds. Here's a list of places there: http://www.visitmurphys.com/dining.html

I think the Dorrington (at the bottom of the list) is run by the people that used to have a place in Murphy's in an old Victorian house that was excellent, but we haven't eaten at the Dorrington.
