Dinner on First Night of Hawaiian Honeymoon

Hi-

I'm trying to figure out if it'll be worth going to a nice dinner on the first day we get to Maui. We are actually only flying from LA to Maui and get in at 11:30 a.m.

We're staying at the Four Seasons. Should we maybe do Mama's for lunch and just wing it for dinner, go to the hotel from the airport and maybe do Mama's for dinner, go to another restaurant or just wing it all together? Thoughts? I'd like to start the trip out with a special dinner, but I wonder if we will be too tired. Plus-how far is Mama's from the 4S? Mapquest said 30 min.

Mapquest is correct. Mama's is very near the airport, and a great place to dine at sunset. Go early and watch the surfers and sailboarders. Four Seasons has some fair restaurants, including Spago's and Ferraro's. You might want to relax that first night. Your body clock will tell you it's 5 hours+/- later than the clock.

If you are staying at the Four Seasons why don't you make a reservation for Spago? We just stayed there and spago was pricey, but very good. That way you are right on the grounds of the hotel and you are eating at a five star restaurant.

It seems to me that Mama's would be quite a drive on your first night. It took us a lot longer than 30 minutes to get there. You must remember that traffic is not accounted for when mapquest gives an estimate. Traffic on Maui can be horrendous about that time of day.

Make sure you call the hotel ahead of time to make this reservation as they book up fast. We had a 5:30 time slot and had the best table in the house. It is a zoo if you go any later than 6:00 PM.

Fivestar gives good advice. Depending on where you're flying in from, you will be TIRED! We flew in from the east coast and opted to go to bed around 9pm and start fresh & rested the next day. Mama's is good, but maybe save it for another day. You will have just driven from the airport to your hotel, to turn around and drive right back seems kinda silly. Stay close to home for the first night. Even though Maui is a small island, driving from Kahului to Wailaia and to Kaanapali is not a quick trip IMHO! Trish

The flight from LA isn't that bad, and arriving before noon, I always wanted to hit the ground running when I visited here. The first time my husband brought me here, he took me the Old Lahain Luau on the first night. It was purely magical for me and definately got me in a Hawaiian mood. We had plenty of time to get from the airport to our condo and to clean up before heading to Lahaina.

You could easily have lunch at Mama's before heading to your hotel, but I'd save Mama's for special night. We used to like to do Mama's as a last dinner, to say aloha to Maui. I know a lot of people like to tack Mama's on to the end of their Hana day, but I always liked getting dressed up and savoring Mama's, arriving early, having cocktails, making an event out of the night.

This could be your first night, as well as your last night. Only you will know if you feel up to a fancy dinner the first night. The time difference won't be that great for you (I never noticeit from LA to here), but you could always make a reservation and then reschedule it if you don't feel like Mama's that night. I have cancelled reservations at Mama's an hour before with no problems.

I usually enjoy someplace you can walk to on your first night in Maui. At the Grand Wailea Resort, there is a great restaurant to get you into the pace of Maui. I know I'll mispell it, it is known for the ridiculously long name, Holuluknuumumuuuiii. You can't miss it! I do recomment a reservation. It is outdoors and delicious. You can stroll there from the Four Seasons.

Oh my goodness! We had the worst meal of any of our too numerous to count Hawaiian stays at Humuhum's! Perhaps we hit a bad night, but even our concierge tried to warn us about this restaurant and we did not heed his advice. The food and service was so bad we swore never to go there again and we have been there three times in the last twelve months and have not returned. Our fish was so dry it was inedible and it took the waiter 45 minutes to come to us to take our wine order. We would never recommend this place to anyone looking for that special "Hawaiian" experience.
