Dinner near Maui Kahului Airport

We are returning home on a "red-eye" flight on Friday, 11/12/04. Since we need to check out of our condo in Kaanapali by 10:00 am, I thought that would be a good day to do the scenic drive to Hana and continue up the coast to the airport. We will still have time to spare before we need to check in so a late dinner somewhere near the airport would work. Any recommendations?

Mama's Fish House might be a good option. Located near the Airport, you could easily stop there for dinner on your way from Hana.

Thank you both very much. I looked at their website and it looks like a great place.

I'd add Hal'maile General Store (in Paia ) to the previously suggested...

I wouldn't cut it too close though. If that road ever gets closed for some reason (it's a one lane road each way), you could be stuck for quite a while.

My wife and I did the same thing last time we were in Maui. We went to a late dinner at Mamas Fish House, and it was a great way to end our trip.

Paia's Fish House is a place you shouldn't miss. A lot less expensive than Mama's, but they only serve seafood. I suggested it to a friend here at work who was going on holiday with his family and they went 3 times while there. The said they couldn't get enough!

Like you, we'll be traveling to Maui in November and I cannot wait to go back.

Have fun and enjoy!

Unless you leave very early, I would be concerned about trying to fit a trip to Hana and dinner at Mama's into a day when you will need to be at the airport. Mama's isn't a fast meal, and you need to allow yourself plenty time to return your car. If you plan on doing to full cirlcle around east Maui, allow yourself 6 - 8 hours.

I have driven to east Maui with no problems and I have days where I just couldn't get a break. If you get behind some slow-moving vehicle who refuses to pull over and allow you to pass, you could a lot of time to the drive.

Thank you all for your recommendations. Maybe I should re-think doing the drive to Hana on our last day. We can still check out both restaurants that day anyway. Fodorites are super people!

I'm going to offer a different suggestion My parents had an 11pm flight out (DH and I left the next day) and we all went to Manana Garage. The food was excellent and we had a great time. Our flight out the next night was also at 11pm and we ended up eating at Siagon Cafe (couldn't get in at Mama's) and were dissapointed. Our waiter never brought us our spring rolls. After that we had ice cream at Baskin Robins which was not so good for what you pay for.

Mamas is an excellent option, BUT plan on a traffic jam on Rte. 36, at Paia, on your way to OGG. There's a single traffic signal, but it backs up a lot of vehicles. This will cost you valuable time.
